why does the amtrack f40 from walthers have a yellow strobe light on each side of the cab above the front winshield? were they really like this? rambo1… i hope i posted in the right forum
ahhh my mistake the loco is not a walthers but a spectrum by bachmann
The Amtrak F40PH engines were delivered with the roof mounted strobes. They were later replaced with the ditch lights. The GE AMD-103 engines had the strobes flush mounted above the wind screen. They were also dumped in favor of ditch lights. Ditch lights became mandatory for any train moving more that 20 mph over a grade crossing - Pretty much everything needs them.

thankyou very much sir for your response. rambo1… I learned something new again.
Here’s what the strobes looked like back when they were used:
Actually, back during the summer of 1995 when I was watching the last runs of the Broadway Limited, the F40PHs on the head end had both strobes and ditch lights. It was always interesting to watch them come through Tiffin at 2:30AM as you could see the glow of the headlight and ditch lights as the train came through town around the curve west of campus, and at the same time, you could see little flashes above the glow.
