Walthers HO Scale ADM Flour Mill

Several yrs ago, Walthers came out w/ its HO ADM flour mill kit I remembered when it came out, but did not pay attention to it. Several months ago, a friend of mine was showing me his 4x12 HO rr and he had that mill on it. Looking @ the scale model closely, it dawned on how familar it looked and indeed it almost is a prototype model of the ADM mill @ Inman, KS on the now UP Golden St route. If anyone is interested and has this model on their layout, the real mill was built in 1892 and was owned by Nabisco which later closed it down. ADM bought it in 1982 and it mainly operated nit as a export mill until closing it down in 2000. THe type of freight cars that ADM would have used would have been 50 foot boxcars for sacked export loading and airslide hops for bulk bakery domestic flour.

Thanks for your info, SFbrkmn. [8D][tup]

I’m building a 60s-early 70s era layout and am looking for industries that are could be served by boxcars, of which I have plenty of.

Does Walthers still produce this kit? I went to the website and typed in the name, but didn’t come up with anything.

If I recall correctly, takes a lot the older I get, but I beleive that model was discontinued about two years back.

Here it is:

Isn’t this it?

If it is, it is available now.

That is an attractive building.

My only criticism is that, while it may be prototypical, that platform is awfully short compared to the ones on similar structures. Of course, a creative modeler can extend it on both sides considerably to accommodate 2 or 3 50ft. box cars.

Add to that, those solid door openings on the left could be cut open to reveal a decorated, lighted interior that the model could create. [;)]
