Does anyone have a good color for painting the Walther’s mission-style station kit? I know the original Santa Fe stations were an off-white, but I’m not sure what mixture would reproduce well. Also, what color was the trim? Trying to capture the look of stucco is more difficult than I thought. It sort of like getting a good concrete color. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I used Apple Barrel Antique White from Wal-mart, stock number 20405, for one on our HO scale club layout. I also put full interiors and super-bright LEDs in it for illumination.
I picked up a can of Rustoleum “speckled” paint for my cobblestone plaza. I also used it on a rock wall, and now I’m trying it on a building. Maybe I’ll get a picture out in a couple of days. It’s an easy way to get a uniform textured appearance on any surface without resorting to an airbrush. I’ve got a can of light brown, but there are others available. In fact, I’m going to look for a dark gray to use for a roof surface, too.
OK - weekend update time. Here’s a picture of one wall of the theater:
The silver frames have been painted and are awaiting theater posters I’ve downloaded and printed. The rectangular holes are for mounting the overhang which I haven’t installed yet.
Once again, you guys on the forum have provided a wealth of terrific ideas. Thanks, Antonio, for the photo. I’m going to add it to my collection as a guide for weathering the finished building. Charles and Mr. Beasley, thanks for the paint suggestions. I’m off to Home Depot and Walmart and will test each product. If you can post photos, that would be really helpful. I would be most anxious to see the interior of the station especially. This building has enormous potential and it’s always fun to see what the creativity of other modelers has produced. Thanks again for all your suggestions.
… and ‘Colonial Yellow’ faded toward white in the bright Southern Calfiforia Sun.
The complete ‘Mission style’ station is reminiscent of Santa Fe’s Santa Ana depot. I would recommend painting the roof a ‘brick’ or ‘tile’ red, and leave the yellow. Trim can be an ‘olive green’
The Southern Calif.‘Surfline’ stations were originally WOOD & built by the Califonnia Southern. Fallbrook was a boxcar.
does anyone know when this type of station was first used ? a quick look on the web makes me guess around 1915 , i’m hoping it’s earlier than that since i’d like to include one on my 1905ish layout
The station produced by Walthers is a Santa Fe station found in New Mexico. The Santa Fe Mission style stations in California are a different style compared to the Walther’s model.
The color would depend on the age. The Kiowa station (RIP) ended up almost yellow. In the hobby store look through the paints for ships sails. Canvas colors often work well for weathered white.
Former AT&SF station in Kiowa Kansas. A unique Mission Style:
As you can see the trim was a brick red that matched the tile roof.
Yes, the main structure is (was) brick, but it was designed for stucco from the start. The mortar on the outside layer of brick is (was) rough, with the wire mesh integrated rather than added on. I’ve got a photo of that somewhere too because I thought it was an interesting design. The bricks came from Coffeyville Kansas.
I built this kit and used, as someone else suggested, an Antique White craft paint. For my own particular reasons (not prototypical) I added a few drops of Antique Rose to give a lightly pinkish cast to the color. I have a picture somewhere, but I am not yet up to speed about posting them to the forums. Perhaps I can attach it to an e-mail to you directly.
It’s a nice kit, in my opinion and I hope you get the results you want.
