I hope I dont open a can of worms, but I am trying to put together a Super Chief Train. I have some of the plated 9700 series Walthers Cars. I was told they are not prototype, due to not having the right fluting, height of fluting, etc. I have a chance to get a complete set of older Super Chief Cars, which are the Walthers 9000 series. Which one’s should I get. Thanks.

thanks, use to be on years ago, had to get a new account.
I have that ATSF Super Chief delema, dont know what to do.
If you are really that concerned about the fluting, size of the skirts, sheen of plating, and other things of that level of detail you probably don’t want either of the Walter’s sets, start looking for brass models of the train.
The original set did not have the correct 4-2-4 sleeper. It used the 4-2-4 Hotevilla series cars from the 1938 Super Chief. The plated set got the windows correct for the 4-2-4 Regal series sleepers. They also ran some painted Regals to match the earlier set, if you can find them. They are more rare than the plated ones. I snagged one off eBay a couple months ago but had to pay a lot for it. A full Super Chief set should have at least 3 of those. So if you aren’t really that detailed oriented (I would guess that 97% of the people seeing your train would never know/see the inaccuracies, and only 5% of those 3% might care.) I would hunt for the first set and add the painted 4-2-4s from the 2nd run.
