Hi gang, are any of the cars of Walthers new City of Los Angles train suitable for the current UP business/excursion train?
I want to build a UP excursion to run behind current UP steam and diesel loco’s.

Julian Sprott

Julian,
For fun, go to the Union Pacific site and type in “business fleet” as a search term. Very interesting.
But, a short (and kinda “quick and dirty”) answer might be:
all the dome cars, the coach, the cafe-lounge, and maybe the baggage–although I imagine every one of them has been modified significantly by UP between the time they were built (Walthers) and now (what you want). It’ll be your choice on modifying any cars you get. On the good side, there ought to be lots of photos available.
And you’ll be needing to re-letter them. If you’re in the mood.
Ya know, I could wonder if Walthers might go ahead and letter some of their models for current UP service.

The tool baggage and crew dormatory are extensively modified with reconfigured doors and windows, the power car appears to be a conversion from a former diner and would make for an interesting kitbash . Also car names are now different, business and theater cars are unique to the UP as well. I know of no model for the converted 50 express box tool car assigned to the 3985, you could probably find an acceptable stand in, although I seem recall they were once available in brass, dito for the business and theater cars as well.
The domes, baggage, coaches you could pretty much use out of the box with just a name change.
