I am weathering with chalk and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about what to use as my protective coating?
hi there, i have found that with chalk there is really no good way to protect the chalk unless you really plaster it on then “dullcote it” but when you spray on the dullcote it pretty much erase’s it.
So what i do is weather the engine and leave a spot where it is easy to pick it up, and pick it up there all the time,
here is some i have done with chalk
If you experience any problem w/ the chalk not adhereing to the factory finish, I recommend coating w/ dullcoat first. Even Bragdon weathering chalks need a flat finish to stick properly.
Once weathered to your satisfaction a coat of flat finish will protect it. Experiment on some old rolling stock to see how heavily you can go as the protective clear coat will mask/ hide a portion of the weathering.
