Weekend Photo Fun 6-8 September 2013

Gidday All, a sunny spring day to end the w**king week, was T shirt weather as I was sheltered from the cold southerly, though have lite the fire for "her-in-doors tonight…

A couple of weeks back kbkchooch offering to this thread referred to “hokey” smoke effects. Here’s one from me [:-^]…

Looking forward to the Really Good Stuff.

Have a Great One Folks, [:D]

Cheers, the Bear.

Bear, nice shot and great stone viaduct, what configuration is that loco? Yellowstone, mallet?

Love these “beasts”

Here’s an EM-1

I must have missed the comment about hokey smoke effects from kbkhooch.

Here’s my contribution to “Hokey Smoke Effects”.

Actually what I said was to ignore the hokey smoke effects in the pic I had posted, as they kinda looked like a gray & white tornado.

But here’s some real smoke. Put in your specs, look really close at the eave of the barn, its there! [:O]

Little Bachmann Consolidation (yes, Botchman!) has a can motor and smoke from the factory. Took a bit of rewiring to add DCC but its there. Hard to find, as most of this Reading RR prototype had the awful pancake motor, but they made a very few this way. I was lucky to find 2 of them.[:D]

Actually, I think the above comment was just meant to “bear-bait” me into posting something this week! [:-^][swg][:-,][(-D]

Nothing wrong with some tasteful smoke. That all looks good to my eyes, guys.

Lots of different stuff this week. Did a lot of final testing of various locos on the Cascade Branch. Found out the K-series didn’t really like 20" curves, except for the K-27. Big diesels did mostly OK.

I did the grade work for a new standard gauge siding and got the cork down while waiting for track components.

Menards has the LED light strips I use on sale ($25 instead of $40) so I added some to a couple of deeper scenes that needed more light. Here’s Silverton.

And the Cascade Branch.

Karl,

Its all good man, I got bear-batied too. LOL

I just finished reworking the freight house at Thurmond by replacing the simple pitch roof to a more prototypical hip roof and added some light weathering via watered down flat black to look like soot

all 3 doors slide open and closed and there is a floor inside so i need some boxes and crates

Nice looking photos everybody. … Bear, the tender looks like an N&W tender so it must be an N&W Mallet … Michael, 4-8-4’s always llok good. … Karl, I like the 2-8-0… Mike L, your layout looks great. … Terry, the freight house looks outstanding.

Here are some F’s. #700D is an F9-AM which was a rebuilt F7-A. The unit had been in a wreck in Colorado.

Here’s a boxcar I’ve been working on. Still got a lot to do to this guy!!

Hey everyone!

School’s finally in, and I can get some work done on the layout in peace again! Nice collection of photos once again! Bear, I love the bridge! and nice smoke effects as well! Bob, I love those EM1’s. We have a pair of them, and they can pull a lot! I love the layout as well. We made some similar scenes using some of your pics as examples. Good job! Michael, that scene is incredible! Great depth! Karl, I applaud you for installing DCC in those old Bachmann Consolidations! That had to be difficult. Those locos have all been retired from our layout for quite a few years now. Mike, I’m impressed with the LED rope lighting effect you’ve achieved. Looks great! We bought a couple of white ones but haven’t started to install them yet. Terry, nice work on the freight house, I love the floor boards! Garry, another awesome scene! That Burlington paint scheme is one of my favorites.

I bought a pair of the new Bowser Pennsy H30 covered hoppers, and weathered them a little. Here’s a couple of images of them:

I’ll have to buy a few more, and possibly kitbash two of them into a five bay H32.

Everyone have a great week!

-Stan

Stan,

Nice work on those H30s. I gotta get me one of those.

You’re gonna love the LEDs. I decided to get two more and almost finish things. I’d like to throw two more up, but I only left one on the shelf at Menard’s [;)]

I used the latest two to do the center peninsula where Durango is located. Here’s a pic with just the blue lights and spill in light from elsewhere.

With the halogens I was using.

And with two 12’ lengths of LEDs.

Ignoring the blue lights and other mostly non-lighting contributors, the main layout room, about 28’ x 16’, is now lit with less than the power of a large lightbulb, right now about 90 watts. Compare that to when I turn on the overhead fluorescents which are close to 1,000 watts alone, plus whatever track lighting I choose.

Plus, the Cool Factor – both temp-wise and tech-wise – is a big bonus.

Great start by everybody this weekend, sorry no smoke, just some cars that I just finished this week!

Atlas Phase II 1932 AAR Boxcar, with a 1950’s repaint, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Greg Komar Decals.

IMRC 50’ PS1 Boxcar, replaced door with Athearn 10’ Wide YSD, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Greg Komar Decals. Paint scheme is a late 50’s repaint.

ExactRail PS 5344CF Boxcar Kit, I know they did this car as RTR but I had the decal, so I assembled the kit (with no directions) Painted it with Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow and lettered with Herald King Decals.

Thanks for looking!

Gidday again, Yeah, Heartland Garry gets the prize, its one of two Rivarossi Y6b’s that I picked up sometime ago, one still in its original, but battered AMH box. Both had been repowered but very poorly, neither could pull the top off a rice pudding. More future projects, one day.

The stone viaduct was my first scratch building effort and is currently on the club Thomas the Tank Engine portable layout which some of us constructed some years ago, the main objective being to allow kids at shows to actually have a go and “drive” a train., promote the hobby. [soapbox] Recently the club executive have, because they haven’t taken care of the layout and can’t be bothered letting kids have a go, mooted that it be dismantled, so I have asked for the bridge back , especially as I paid for the materials myself. The rub is that I can have the bridge as long as I build them a new Thomas layout, so as I said, they can wreck it again.[:(!][:(!]

Which of course leads me into accusations of "Bear Baiting". Bears do not like to be baited, Bears can get very Growley and this one in particular very very [:(!], so Bear does not bait other people. Do unto others… ( heck I’m starting to sound like “The Lion” so had better stop). However, though not in this case, I have been known to cast a fly into the pond just to see who bites, it can be fun.[:D][}:)] Got two Great Photos and I didn’t even try. [swg]

As I’ve come to expect, Great Stuff everyone. [bow][bow]

Cheers, the Bear.

Been working on these lately.

Varney F3A Burlington locomotive with original working drive.

Varney F3A undecorated locomotive on Athearn blue box drive.

Seven O.K. ‘shorty’ Streamliner passenger cars.

I added a Walthers ‘folded paper type’ diaphragm to the observation car yesterday. It wasn’t in the greatest of shape but I did the best I could with it.

All we need is a Tiger and George Takai,

then its Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh My! [(-D][:-,][;)][swg]

Good stuff again this week guys!

Smoke effects? Here is one from the BRVRR. I use it as wall paper on my desk top computer.

NYC Hudson #5335 rounds the curve at the west end of the BRVRR layout.

Something different from the BRVRR:

Union Pacific F-7A at the head of a short passenger train rounds another portion of the same curve.

I had a great time installing a Digitrax DH123 decoder in this little Athearn ready-to-run loco. I devised a couple of internal housings for small incandescent light bulbs to better display the lighting effects. I’m really pleased with the result. Now all I have to do is find another A or B-unit, for the sound decoder!

Keep the photos and ideas coming everyone. You always make WPF the best thread of the week!

WPF, delightful way to start the day.

Regards, Peter

Ah… The best thread of the week!

I have finally had a few minutes to get back to some model railroading! Finished putting together a Jordan Models Packard truck which will finish the scene I have been doing.
