Westside PRR K5 transformation.

I finally finished the transformation of an unpainted brass K5 super pacific to a running quality model with some decent details. It is the first brass loco I have painted and also the first using an air brush. I have painted models before but used rattle cans. The loco is an E-bay find for under $150. The paint is Scalecoat 1, Decals from Wilson model works, and marker lights and other parts from Bowser and Cary. It is detailed to represent how it looked in 1937 before the stoker and other details were added and changed. There were grabs at the top of the coal board but they did not last long with handling so I did not put them back on. The motor was tuned using K&J super magnets and fitted with an SMLED for the headlight and Loksound Select decoder with large rectangular speaker and enclosure inside the tender.

Its a darn good thing I am a better mechanic than a photographer. The album is in reverse so the newest photos are in the beginning and the oldest are on the last page. I apologize for the foggy pictures.

Looks pretty nice.

Pete, great looking loco, gives me something to shoot for when I do my K5. I managed to pick one up a couple of years ago on Evil-Bay. One of the number of projects to get done. The painting is not the problem the work on bullet proofing the mechanism and testing it for a long time is the problem.

Thank you guys. I appreciate it.

Rick.

Mine had a KTM gear box and KTM open frame motor. I did have to re-quarter the drivers and put some super magnets in the motor. After that a little lube and a silicone hose for a coupling and this baby runs better than it looks. I did shim the worm in the gear box to limit the fore and aft movement. I will be taking mine to the club this weekend and pull a ten car lash up of heavy weight cars around the clubs track.
