What are the Differences of SD90MAC-H II and the SD70ACe ?

I am a big fan of the SD70ACe engines, love em!! I also recently learned the new unique look is not all that new because of the SD90MAC-H II looks just like the SD70ACe except for two differences that I notice besides the obvious series of road numbers

  1. The SD90MAC-H II has no flags on the side

  2. The SD90MAC-H II has headlights on the nose not above the window like the SD70ACes.

Any other real differences otherwise? I am sure horsepower must have changed too right?

The horsepower on the ACe is 4300 and it uses the 710 series prime mover. You could also go to the EMD website for more info. Bob

They are not built on the same length frame. The SD90MAC and the SD43/90 MAC version is longer in length at 80’ 2".

The SD70Ace is shorter but I don’t have the exact number. They are closer to the length of the SD70MAC’s, which are about 74 feet.

They do like the same overall but the SD70Ace is different and was a new design.

Maybe someone can give us the length of the new unit.

They both look very similar.

They both look very nice. Well I wonder how many SD90MAC-H II did they make? Does any company have a model of that engine or can we ever expect to see that model made??

I had the SD90Mac from Overland, but sold it about a year ago. It was the II version with the cab that is now used on the SD70Ace. It is longer than the new SD70Ace.

The CP units had a different cab ( 2 piece window )on those like the first group of SD90MAc’s for the UP. The UP still has the first twenty units but turned back the rest of the order.

6000 HP engine with Phase II cab. The engine compartment had the 45 degree top edge. The SD90/43Mac with the 4300 HP engine did not have the 45 degree top edge on the engine compartment. The UP still has 309 of the 4300 HP units in service.

6000 HP engine with regular cab. Phase I The up still has twenty two of these but the picture shows them in storage in 2007.

Check out the two pictures below to view the differences between the Original 8552 and the new 8552, which is a SD70Ace. They don’t look alike from the side.

Side view of 8552 SD90Mac before being renumbered to the 8900 series to make room for the SD70Ace that is now number 8552.

Looks like Overland is my only friend now. Aww man Well maybe one day, maybe one day. They both doo look so much alike though!! Ok they are definitely considered twins though. One is the Arnold Swartzeneggar and the other is Danny Devito. LOL
