What are you riding this summer?

Every summer, Mrs. Buckeye Riveter and I try to ride at least one tourist railroad. This year we have already ridden the Potomac Eagle in Romney, West Virginia, photos below.

It was a great ride and we saw 5 eagles on our trip. [8D] The food in the dinning car was excellent. [tup] Just like the old days.

What are you riding this summer? Can you tell us all about your trip?

Nice photos Buckeye,

I’d like to ride the Cass Valley, but it’s 5 hours away and my funds are low.

I’ve ridden the Cass. It is my second favorite trip in the US.

Chevy Silverado Ext Cab pickup and Nissan Maxima. [:D] Well you aksed!!! The Great Smokey Mountains Railroad. I’d love to be able to ride the Amtrac from NY to Cal.

I’ll be riding behind Milwaukee Road 261on July 2nd. Don’t worry, I’ll post pictures.[swg]

Now that we’re getting some rain, a lawn tractor. Seriously, we have plans for the Copper Canyon trip in October. If time allows I might take the grandaughter to ride Thomas at the Great Smokey Mt. Ry. in July.

I’ll be going to the Illinois Railway Museum for Father’s Day and riding whatever is running that day - hope it’s the Frisco steam engine.

Surprisingly, I actually got to go into the cab on the 261. That was when they brought it to Fond du Lac. I remember those few days every once in a while you would hear a sweet whistle blast coming . We live just a block from a crossing and hear horns all the time. But, this was the 261 steamer!! I found out from my engineer friend that they (the 261 crew) thought they would do some highway jobs before they made an excursion ride. They did freight service all afternoon. I don’t think I ever told you this, but a CN/Wisconsin Central yard is right here! You can go over their and watch switchers hump cars all day, take them onto the mainline, and the off they go. There is a roudhouse and transfer table there, a roundhouse, and too much other stuff to name!![:D]

I’m going to Tennessee. Does anybody know of good trains to see there, in Kentucky, and western West Virginia? Other than that, if all goes well, then Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway may be on the horizon (I highly reccomend both).

See you around the forums,
Daniel

trainjunky29,

If your trip to Tenn. is through Chatanooga, try the Tenn. RR Museum, they run steam. Went to the TCA Convention there a few years back and took the train ride behind a diesel, the steamer was down for overhaul.

Try the Western Maryland Scenic Railway in Cumberland, Maryland.

Buckeye, where do you board the Potomac Eagle?

Yes, the Western Scenic is also a great ride and the restored station is really looking good.

We boarded the Eagle in Romney, West Virginia, just 35 miles south of Cumberland, Maryland. (I inadvertantly called Romney, Ripley in my previous posting.) The eagles were sighted along the South Branch of the Potomac River.

Wife has mentioned going to WVA. Just maybe we do that ride. [8D]

Maybe the Branson Scenic Railway, if we make it to Branson, MO this summer. We’ll be in Arkansas visiting family - I hope to convince my wife that we head a little farther north.

WE have reservations in 2 weeks on the Tygart Flyer in W.V. Looking forward to the 6 hour round trip in the Cheat Mountain area. I used to drive all over that area years back. Now it will be nice to sit back and ride the rails. There are several other trains in the area also (Cass Senic RR, Salamander, Durbin Rocket), but one ride is all that we have time for. Was on the Cass 20 years ago. Nice ride(take sweater for an overcast day).

Your trips sound far more thrilling than my trips on the Chicago Metra!!!

I am planning a trip to the Illinois Railway Museum, maybe two! I am visiting family in So Cal the last week of July, hopefully revisiting a childhood memory - Colton Tower! I used to get to go up in the tower when I was 12. I’ts what sparked my love for trains!

For some Americans we are restricted to Amtrak, ARR or VIA Rail Canada as the vast majority of tourist operations and dinner trains are unable to accommodate wheelchairs. Maybe times will change but I don’t see it happening any to soon.

Not much planned this summer. We’re going to Vermont this year, so we might check out the Green Mountain Flyer. Maybe I’ll stop by a few of the 6 tourist railroads in the area, too.

What am I riding this summer?

Well…I’m riding my Harley Softail to the Walkersville Southern Railroad
and riding the WSRR for a day. Short line that is long on fun and ops.
Lotta 'critters! Davenport, Plymouth and an EMD Model 40! All operational.

I’m looking for a tourist railway that runs in New Mexico. If you know of any, please let me know.
