Hi
I have a BL-2 that I wish to repaint into the Monon Black and Gold scheme. Looking on Walthers there are various GOLD paints listed. What GOLD should I go for? Modelling in the UK so would welcome views

I seem to recall something about Monon diesels in RMC, but a search of the magazine indexes here didn’t turn up the one of which I was thinking. I did find a formula, using Floquil paints, by Mont Switzer in the September 1987 issue of Mainline Modeler, although he pointed out that the formula, first concocted 10 years earlier, was virtually useless because Floquil had since adjusted the shades of the paints used in the original mix. His suggestion was to use a 50/50 mix of Floquil Bright Gold and Bright Silver, then adjust the ratio to suit your tastes.
I don’t model Monon, and have seen that paint scheme only in photos, but to my uneducated eye, Floquil’s Brass looks just about right, straight out of the bottle.

Many thanks Wayne for the information. I will have a go at getting some of the paints

HI
The paints suggested via the Floquill range cannot be exported into the Uk due to containing hazardous substances. Is there a range of paints that do not contain the banned Floquill substances?

Oh, yeah, I forgot about those rules “protecting” us. [sigh] You’re only allowed to use hazardous substances if they’ve been made in your own country - ya never know what kinda stuff foreigners put in their hazardous substances. [:P][(-D]
I don’t know how well water-based paints replicate metallic finishes, so you might instead want to take a look at Humbrol, which is, I believe, based in the U.K. I use their Metallic Silver for brush-painted details and find it superior to any others with which I’m familiar.

Well I guess if you’re in the UK saying it’s “Purdue Gold” wouldn’t help. [swg]
The Monon’s black-and-gold scheme was based on the uniforms of the Purdue University sports teams, the red-and-white was based on Indiana University’s colors. Both are “Big 10” schools located in the area the railroad served.
Anyway, it’s a ‘bronze-gold’ or ‘metallic gold’, that is, it’s not dark yellow which is often called gold.
Hi
The snow has finally melted and with it some normality and a chance to get to the model shop. You were correct Humbrol Gold with just a touch of Humbrol Brass makes a good match when judged against a Proto 1000 in Monon livery
