So RR engines and cars are what we normally see on RR tracks. Other than that there are speeders, hi-rail trucks and misc maintanance vehicles. Is there anything else?
A couple categories not mentioned:
- Diesel Multiple Units
- Electric Multiple Units
- Light Rail cars
- Trolleys
- Subway (heavy rail) cars
- RoadRailers
- Hi-rail trucks that pull railcars
- Trackmobiles
- Stegosaurus (a la John Allen) [:-^]
Charlatans, swindlers and scoundrels were often run out of town on a rail.
Evidently kittens according to another discussion.
I’ve seen several self-propelled rail cranes on the tracks. They always seem to have squeaky, little horns.
We have a Gradall with hi-rail wheels. It also has a coupler and air compressor, so it can be used for limited railcar movement.
While we’ve got the usual assortment of buckets for it, the majority of time it’s fitted with what I refer to as “the mother of all weed-wackers” for brush control along the tracks.
We also have a wood chipper fitted with retractable rail wheels.
Hobos!
Ooops…I’ve said the H word…
Rail Bikes
Rail Scooters
Rail Speeders
Rail cars
Rail Gooses
a variety of unique Draisine vehicles such as:
H-bos[:P]
Signalmen on scooters (mini-bikes with a sidecar)
Grinders
Semi’s with high rail gear
Corrugation analyzers/ D-Cars/ Geometry cars
I do like that!
Add Rollercoasters, too.
I do so know this feeling! [X-)]
Boats. There’s a bigger one in Europe somewhere, but I can’t remember where.
And then there is the TLM (Track Laying Machine).
Normal operation is the front part of the machine is off the track, as there is no track, and as you can see, the crawler/loader is in effect the lead locomotive. The machine lays its own track, and the back part of the TLM rides on the track that it has just laid.
What is not visible in this photo is a string of flat cars holding concrete ties waiting to be placed, and likely a pair of gantry cranes riding rails on top of the flat cars that shuttle fresh ties to the front end. The front part of one of those cranes is visible at the left of the photo.
This machine does require that the new rails be dragged into position at the sides of the roadbed prior to the TLM operation.
