what engines are you running on your layout

Hi everyone,

Just a general post here to see what everyone is running engine wise on their layouts. Mine is one I just got an athern Santa Fe. Was thinking it would be a fun little post.

I’m not going to post photos of them but I’ll list what locos are on the layout at this time.

Two Bachmann GP7’s, a Bachmann GP38-2, an Atlas SD24 rebuilt to an SD27J, a Frankenstein chopped roof F unit slug, an Athearn/Proto GP35, three Frankenstein F units, an Athearn/Proto F7 and something that’s made up of pieces from a Stewart AS16, Proto FA1, Bachmann GP40 body and assorted Athearn parts.

4 Roundhouse 2-8-0

1 roundhouse 4-4-0

2 Spectrum 4-6-0

2 Spectrum 4-4-0

3 Mantua 0-6-0 camelbacks

On the workbench:

Kit bashed Tyco 4-6-0

Kit bashed Mantua 0-6-0

Brass 0-6-0 from 2-6-0

Brass 2-8-0 camelback

Atlas h-24-66

H-16-44

BLI SW-7

J-1-2-10-4

T-1 2-10-4

Among others 2 stock H-24-66s pulled a 122 car train, the H-16-44s will pull 86 cars 2 SW-7s will pull about 45 cars The J1s have had 51/2 oz of lead added and will pull about 50 cars with out traction tires. Next up will be bull frog snot on some drivers for the steamers.

Hi,

Its taken me a lot of years, but I’ve finally got the combo of locos I’m very happy with that are on the layout.

IC: BLI E7 A/A, BLI SW9

ATSF: BLI 4-8-4, 2-10-2, Spectrum 2-8-0 (2), BLI F7 ABBA, P2K GP7 (2), P2K GP9 (2), Stewart FT ABBA, Stewart switchers (2), P2K switcher, Stewart F3 ABBA

Several have sound, and while I like them all, the BLI 4-8-4 northern is outstanding!

I won’t list all of them, but as an example, my largest class of ATSF diesels are the mid production and snoot SD40-2 and I have a total of 79, most are Kato some are Athearn. Obviously I have a lot of shelves built into the underside of the layout where I store surplus. Can’t help it, just love those diesels.

Bob

I am going to have to do this from memory as I am work now.

2 CSX NRE 3gs21b

2 CSX GP-38

1 CSX GP-40-2 ( I have two but one is on a small diorama at my work desk)

3 SD-70ACE (2 CSX and one UP)

1 Alco Rs-36

1 CSX SD-70 (it is in “the shop” now pending a new decoder)

3 SD-60 (2 CSX and 1 Conrail patched to CSX)

1 CSX Dash -9

2 other locos… one a BNSF and another UP but I remember which Dash’s they are.

When I build Slate Creek (a ISL) I will use these engines on a rotation bases…

nothing at the moment the last things I had run weren’t on the layout. it was my BN passenger train.

My roster of locomotives is always changing and evolving as my tastes change a bit, or as new items come out that fit my needs. I run Union Pacific in the mid-1950s and current, plus I run some CB&Q in the mid 1950s and BNSF current stuff. I have about 6 BNSF 6-axle road units - Kato SD70MAC and AC4400, two Intermountain ES44ACs, an Athearn SD70MAC and an Athearn SD70ACe. On the1950s era UP side I have an A-B-B-A set of P2K FAs that have received extra details, a couple sets of F-units by Athearn and Stewart, several GP9s from P2K that have received UP details and modifications, a pair of Genesis GP9s, a couple RSC2s, a set of PAs, two sets of E8/9s, several switchers, a couple GTELs, and a small assortment of UP steam power. For modern UP I run a couple Genesis SD70ACes, a coupe Genesis SD70Ms, a pair of Kato SD9043MACs, a pair of Kato C44ACs, and am working on a set of Athearn C44ACs (being equipped with DCC), a Genesis Centennial and a few assorted local service units from Athearn and Kato. A few more units are either on the workbench or waiting their turn at upgrades. As new power becomes available I tend to sell off the older equipment and get the new. Right now I have been looking at thinning out several older units or units that don’t quite fit my era and spending the money or more DCC and sound cards to upgrade my primary oower sets. That darned sound is addictive! The trick isn’t what units to acquire, it’s limiting yourself to the stuff that fits the theme (but I still do some impulse buys!)

Jeffrey, What are Frankenstein engine(s)? Are they a mix of different engines?

BINGO! Myn three Frankenstein F units are a total mix of parts from Athearn, Stewart, Aline, Varney, Proto, and God knows what else. One of them has parts from eight manufacturers.

As I am more interested in scenic than operation I keep my 2 MOST reliable locos on the layout for visitors and those odd occaisions when I feel like operating. They are a 4-6-2 IHC Premier Gold and a Bachman S-4 Black Widow. I also have a F-7 Athern Black Widow parked on a siding for 2 train operation.Just don’t ask about the locos in display cases around the layout.

In no particular order; all are lettered for my Winneshiek & Western except the Clinchfield locomotive (The WWRR connects with the Clinchfield):

Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0

PFM/United “Ma & Pa” 2-8-0

Overland “Little River” 2-4-4-2

Bachmann Spectrum 3-truck Shay

PFM/United Hillcrest 2-truck Shay

PFM/United “Elk River” 2-truck Climax

Bachmann 2-8-0 lettered for Clinchfield

On the workbench is one of the newer Bachmann 2-6-0’s, which came lettered Pennsylvania and is headed for paint & lettering.

Bill

This is just off the top of my head thats on the layout. I’m probably going to miss a few…

6 ONR Athearn Genesis SD75I’s

4 ONR Proto2000 GP38-2’s

3 ONR Atlas GP40-2’s

6 ONR GP9’s

3 ONR Atlas RS3’s

4 Canadian Pacific Kato AC4400CW’s

5 Canadian Pacific SD40M-2’s

2 Canadian Pacific GP38-2’s

2 Canadian Pacific Athearn Genesis MP15AC’s

2 Canadian Pacific Atlas MP15DC’s

4 Canadian Nation Atlas GP40-2W’s

2 Canadian National Proto 2000 GP38-2’s

1 Canadian National Atlas GP40-2

I run a bunch from brass to Athearn, Atlas, Spectrum. IHC, Stewart, BLI. kit built steamers, Bachman, Mantua, even the Franklin Mint New York Central Hudson. Some I have to tinker with, especially the brass. The BLI, Spectrum, Athearn, and IHC steamers run well, sometimes the brass is a different story. MY BLI, Spectrum, Bachman, Atlas, Athearn and some other are realy smooth.

This is a weathered IHC>

She still works the yards and sometimes she’ll even take some freight for a short run to the next town. I don’t have a train museum but if I did she be the first to be inducted.

This is an old Varney re-built, it has a metal body, of the Pennsy. The SP unit is also brass.

Well I model N-Scale and on the layout I have…

2 Kato E8s PRR

1 Atlas C420 Piedmont and Northern

1 Atlas NS Dash 8-cw9 (I am not exactly sure about this one)

1 Kato SD70ACe MOPAC

1 Kato RDC

1 Con-cor PA-1 GN (Big Sky Blue)

1 Bachmann 44 toner D&RGW

All are DCC. The 2 atlas and 1 Bachmann have factory installed decoders. The rest I converted to DCC.

I made an aqusition of a large collection of N-scale items just before Christmas. Among the items are 3 Kato PA-1s and 2 PB-1s (UP and PRR [Green]) that will converted to DCC when funding allows. There are numerouse other DC locomtives in the collection but they are old enough that conversion to DCC most likely cannot be done or I will not go to the trouble because the install will be considerably more difficult than drop in. Much of the equipment is from an era prior to the developement of DCC…Can we say Arnold Rapido? But this is about what is on the railroad and not what may be coming…

I am trying to get more pictures from the WTRR

ICG even dedicated one of these to Casey Jones. Atlas 37 tears old.

She still works the yards and sometimes she’ll even take some freight for a short run to the next town. I don’t have a train museum but if I did she be the first to be inducted. Nice brass unit with more brass passenger cars.

Several years ago, while at a train show in Columbia, S.C., I happened upon a display of PRR engines that had been re-motored with new chassis and drive trains but the shells were of a vintage model. Upon inquiring as to the make of the shells they turned out to be made by Varney and Co.

Each engine had a German motor installed with smooth running linkage to the trucks. He only wanted $50.00 per engine. They had lights installed, the shells themselves are a heavy metal and for the money really looked good so I bought one. Here it is, I thought some of you who appreciate the impact Varney made on our hobby might be intersted. Believe me it is heafty.

The SP is brass. The steamer is also brass.

Thanks,

Robert Sylvester, WTRR

ok now I am running something, a lone SP&S Alco RS1.

At present, my loco fleet consists of:

2-Atlas/Kato GP-7’s

1-Proto 1000 Baldwin BL-2

1-Proto 1000 EMD F-3A

1-Bachmann Consolidation 2-8-0

1-Spectrum GE 44 Ton Switcher

I plan on eventually adding a couple more, but not for awhile yet. Have other scenery, structure and track laying projects in the works right now.
