I thought it would be a coal mine, but, now that it is finished, it looks still looks like a hotel. Please critique this. Has someone ever seen rooms over tracks before? I’m thinking of calling it, The Brakeman Hotel.
You can see where I placed the new structure at the top of this first pic.
What have you created? I dunno, but if it’s a hotel, it wouldn’t be able to charge much for those rooms over the tracks… Let’s see, getting woke up by a train running under your bed at 3:00AM… Not a big seller, I’d guess. [:D] Really interesting fire escape chutes at each end, too…
If I’ve learned one thing in the last 50 years of model railroading, it’s that there’s a prototype for everything. Just because you’ve never heard of it, doesn’t mean it hasn’t been done.
Whatever it is, it’s s good job of building it! And you’re right - it does look like a hotel, if you discount the tracks underneath it. I don’t think most coal mines would have lace curtains in the office…[:)] If it was a dark color - black or dark brown or gray, that’d help move it more to a coal mine look…
What ever it is it looks good. I saw a special yesterday about a guy in England that restored a castle on the side of a mountain. It sits right above a busy mainline passenger train tunnel. The trains look like they’re running into the castles basement when they enter the tunnel. (2 tracks) The guy said they average 12 trains an hour day and night. He’s a train buff so he doesn’t mind. YES, there is a prototype for everything.
Breakfast served all day long for those types…And five star, white linen, exquisite dining, retro to the famous “Name Trains” of yesteryear, for those looking for a bit of nostalgia.
With non-stop railfaning and good food, a fellow would most likely have to call ahead for a reservation!
I would bash it further. The problem is it still looks like a motel. On stilts.
In the front Cut off the roof overhang, the sidewalks and steps, and block/replace many of the windows and doors with styrene. It will then look more like a mine building and not a motel.
Also traveling into NYC from PA there are apartment buildings built right over the (car) roads. I am sure somewhere in there there must be buildings built over the railroads.
And keep in mind that in some places worldwide there are passenger stations built over the tracks. Perhaps instead of a mine, you might adapt it to a station!
It would seem a great place for a track industry office… over the tracks… just my 2 cents. A bit of kitbashing and it would look even more impressive than it is (GREAT job!!!)
Hey, all’s not lost. Change it to a restaurant. Some years ago I remember driving under one located at a rest stop on the Ohio turnpike. But whatever you want to do with it you sure have made it to look good.
