I was looking thru some old Walthers books (1981) and saw a Snow Coaling Tower made by SCALE STRUCTURES LIMITED. What exactly was this used for? It actually looks like it dumps snow instead of coal but the size of the shute.

Snow was the company that made (or designed) the tower. It was used for coal to supply steam locomotives. That round looking cylinder was the coal bunker. There is a better picture at http://www.hobbylinc.com/~hobbylinc/htm/slt/slt1116.htm
Yeah,T.W. Snow was the designer of that type of 100 ton Cap.coaling station. There are good drawings in the Sept.‘59’ MR. Says it was built in the 30s and could service two tracks. Mr states its a nice size for Model Railroads. Could be built with styene and plastruct shapes/ BILL
DUH!! Thanks for clearing that up. The huge shute is what was confusing me. In fact why is the shute so huge?
Thanks
Mike
If you’re refering to the large cylinder part, that’s the storage bin, not the chute. The chute is hard to see in that picture, but it’s at the bottom corner of the large cylinder. The picture in the link that Maxman provided shows it better, and you can see there’s two chutes, that will allow it to service two tracks. One is off the end of the cylinder, and the other below the cylinder.
If by the “shute” you mean the big round thing, that is the tank in which the coal was stored. The actual chutes are normal size located under the tank. I can see where it might be confusing, but I just happened to have this magazine open in front of me and as long as the magazine remains open I will remain knowledgable on this subject. BILL
