Recently, I have taken a fasenation with mainline steam excursion trains, but I am curious as to what kind of planning goes down to make one of these happen?
Join rypn.org and read the threads on the topic (including some of the sarcasm about what’s actually required or involved to get things done right) and then ask on their ‘Interchange’. Multiple people with distinctive competence in both the technical and ‘political’ aspects are frequently reading and posting there.
Back in the early 1990s (1992?), there was a story in Trains on the planning of an excursion with the Nickel Plate Road 765 that detailed a trip to Pittsburgh, covering planning for speed restrictions, clearance issues, etc. Unfortunately, I can’t get to my collection of back issues to find the exact issue.
