I thought it would be interesting to know what kind of locomotive power is most popular with railfans so tell me your opinion. My favorite is steam.[:D]
I voted for diesel as that is what I grew up with. I have only seen steam in fantrip service, and really enjoy seeing it.I like electrics but have only seen them on trips to the east coast.A few of my favorites are the GG1,Little Joe(seen on the CSS&SB),and E33.I like EP5s but have only seen them on the dead line.
Steam is much cooler. While I did not grow up in that era I still like it.
I love diesels.
This may be a tacky sidestep, but since almost all Diesel loco’s are Diesel-electric, I chose electric
But really, although electric is hard to come by in comparison to Diesel and the growing number of tourist trains with steam, I am impressed by it. My favorite locomotive is Raymond Loewy’s GG-1, for example.
It hurts me to say – if no one else has said it yet – that Chicago’s “Skokie Swift” rapid L service (more of an interurban really) no longer switches from third-rail to overhead “on the fly.” The Town of Skokie’s portion of the tracks have been refitted with third-rail, and the catenary is about to come down. Evanston always was on third-rail, “always” being my shorthand for when the CTA adopted Skokie Swift service in the late 1960s, and perhaps earlier…in the North Shore days of the Skokie Valley Route (?)
Electric because I ride amtrak trains in Cleveland, Ohio. And electric trains are fast![:p]
And isn’t that just a paradoxical statement! [:p]
MY VOTE GOES FOR TURBINES!
And since Turbine is not listed, I have not cast an actual ballot.

Sorry I missed your favorite. I was considering having turbines on the list but then decided against it. Since there is an interest in turbines I will add it to the list.
I’m a little young to appreciate steam the way I should. It’s impressive, but I grew up with diesel. I think a lot of people tend to gravitate to what they saw as kids. I was a GP and second gen SD kid. They were still using F units, but I’ve never had much of a thing for them… Go figure.

I grew up during the days of steam. It is hot, dirty, hard work for the firemen and a whole lot of other things that are not good. I can see nothing good in a steam powered railroad. Give me diesel.
PS. while we’re at it: it seems to me we spend much much more space in Trains Magazine devoted to steam than I would like to. see.
give me a GG1 anyday.
Tough luck. Everbody else likes steam and I don’t think that TRAINS magazine will cut down on their steam content.
Steam has always been my favorite, especially the smaller engines i.e. 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-8-0, 2-6-0. But I also like the others especially the GG1.
Enjoy

Diesel/Electric. I especially like air conditioned units. If you have ever run an engine with no A/C you know what I am talking about. Those hot Texas days can be really tough without it. On a very hot day the temperature can get well over 100 in the cab. Another reason is with A/C you have the window closed thus cutting down on all the outside noise i.e. whistle.
I Love Diesel Locomotives , Nothings more eye catching and Jaw dropping than a Steam Locomotive .
I’m a diesel guy because that’s what I’m growing up with, all though, I have come to like steam quite a bit.
