What pin vise should I buy?

I understand that I need a pin vise for drilling holes for my rivets. I’m sure there are good and bad. It feels like a jungle. What pin vise do you recommend? I want a high quality one, price doesn’t really matter.

I saw a pin vise from Tamiya that looks nice.

I like the ball head pin vise. Mine has a wooden ball, but I don’t remember where I got it. Micro-Mart has one with a plastic ball http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=80743.

The one that you show by Tamiya is like the one that I have. It is a great pin vise.

The one from Tamiya looks good. I have one of those ball types and never use it, too bulky. For general use I prefer this one: 21105 SWIVEL HEAD PIN VISE from Micromart: http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Department&ID=16 It’s made by Mascot (they make a lot of modeler’s tools), it comes with 2 double ended collets so you can use everything from #80 up to 3/16. I have 4 of them at the work bench with different common sizes I use so I don’t have to change bits all the time. I also have a couple of these:

15116 HIGH PRECISION MICRO PIN VISE

for #78 & #80 drill bits which require a bit more delicate handling. For #77 and larger I use the 21105.

As I do a lot of custom work, I have to drill a lot of holes. To speed things up I use a 12volt motor tool like the Microlux drill from Micromart. I use an old MRC power pack to power it which can be adjusted from 0-10 000 rpm unlike a dremel which starts at around 5000 rpm. The 12 volt tool is much easier to control at lower speeds and can even be slowed down with finger pressure so I rarely melt the plastic I’m drilling and I don’t break as many drill bits. I bought mine from Fulgerex when I was in Germany 20 years ago.
