I don’t know about me but their are some songs out there that reminds me about railroading, not directly connected to railroading but just the pace or feeling
My 2 songs that remind me are:
Love you like I do by HIM
and
Heart of Gold by Neil Young
What are your songs that remind you of railroading?
There’s a song we’re playing in band class called “The Great Locomotive Chase” and as the title may tell, the composer did a great job of replicating train sounds, especially in the percussion section.
Have you heard “Southern Pacific” by Neil Young? Now that sounds like a railroad song. Seldom played on radio, one would have to dig deep into the Reactor CD to find it.
City of New Orleans… Woody Guthrie(or is it Arlo?)
Little Pink Houses… John Melencamp (more for the video/Chesie freight)
The Train Song… Todd Snider (I am a runaway locomotive/with a one track mind)
One piece that really gets to me, and not just by evoking train memories, is the one titled “The Train” that is usually played around Christmas time. It’s a narration to music by Celestial Navigations.
Locomotive breath… Jethro Tull. Metallicas song that was on S&M with the San Fran orchestra cant think of the name but the beat and the chorus is perfect.
Johnny Cash Rock Island Lines ( well duh)Folsom Prison Blues.
Everytime I’m on the subway here in NYC and the engineer / operator is really pushing it, I start singing “Going of the rails on a crazy train” in my head. [:D]
The class of music that has the most songs actually about trains is Bluegrass.
We could spend hours on Bluegrass.
The music type that has sounds in it that resemble the engines and motors of diesel-electric locomotives is post-1984 Pop and Rock. It all started with the background sound of the Madonna Song “Like a Virgin”. Why is there a simulated diesel idle in the background of that song?
(1) I now have “Like a Virgin” playing in a loop in my head; and (2) I now cannot get out of my head the image of Madonna writhing/squirming/slithering around on the floor in the “Like a Virgin” video.
For me it’s the theme song from “In The Heat of The Night” (the movie naturally), and also Duke Elington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” or perhaps the really old song “On The Atchinson Topeka and Santa Fe”.
“City of New Orleans” is a natural as are"Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers, “Casey Jones” by the Grateful Dead, “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash, and “Locomotive Breath” by Jethro Tull. Of course as mentioned “Crazy Train” comes to mind too.
“Southern Pacific” is an excellent and rare tune that more people should hear! I also love the harmonica on Blackfoot’s “Train, Train.”
One I can’t stand though is Cowboy Troy’s “I Play Chicken with the Train.” Terrible message by an artist who I feel has little talent of his own. Just asking for some stupid idiots to try it themselves and get killed. Just my opinion though.
