Hi All, I have been working on the benchwork and elevations for the new layout and ran into a problem… What do I do with all this scrap foam? Most of it is really small peices but before I pitch it wanted to make sure you dont use the small stuff for other things. ie grind it up and spread it over x or use it to fill in gaps.
Speaking of gaps, what do you use to fill them in? Like between levels and the Z bends of the Woodland scenic risers?
Except for the smallest pieces I have been saving pieces of foam scrap to provide the underpinning for gently rolling hills. I would be covering it with plaster impregnated towels or gauze or perhaps the new grassy vinyl sheets that Woodland Scenics is offering. I also use them as transitions from elevated right of way, using the hotwire tool to even things out.
For filling in the gaps I have been using a DAP crackshot knife grade spackle compound that a fellow at DAP (also a model railroader) recommended to me. I add just a bit of brown latex paint to it so that if it chips you won’t see dead white. So far it works very well, has not been affected by changes in season and humidity, and is easy to spread, especially when the package is fairly new.
