IN 1955 I travelled overnight from NYC to Chicago, as best I can remember, the journey started with a steam loco. but sometime during the night it changed to a diesel, does this sound correct?
I can’t remember what company it was with, does anyone know what type of engine would have been used?
Thanks
1955 seems a little late for steam out of NYC. That said if you where on the Pennsy it would have been a K4 Pacific (4-6-2). Actually it would more than likely have been a GG1 Electric to Harrisburg and then possibly steam or Diesel the balance of the trip.
If you where on the New York Centeral it could have been a J1 Hudson (4-6-4) or a Niagara (4-8-4) or possible a Mohawk (4-8-2).
This is stricly a guess.[:D]

Lest we forget, the B&O was still operating the Royal Blue Line at the time, albeit from Jersey City with some through service to Chicago. Maybe somebody more knowledgable about the demise of B&O steam can fill us in on this possibility.
Thanks to both of you for your replies.
Your suggestions have not helped my memory but it was 50 years ago and I have enough trouble remembering what I did last week.
I’d give anything to be making that journey now.
Thanks again
Joe
How about the Erie with a change to Diesel at Marion, OH.
Or a combo via Buffalo on LV or DL&W/NKP.
These would seem logical.
You could have rode behind a Pennsy T-1 4-4-4-4 too.
