What was the last year for K brakes?

Hi guys.

I should know this but can not find what I am looking for. What year was the last year cars equipped with K brakes allowed into interchange? I am not interested in the MOW equipment. I know there is a date that K brakes were not allowed into interchange. I found a book on AB brakes dated 1945. AB brakes came out around 1930 or so.

Thanks.

Pete

I did a quick search and , according to Andy Sperandeo, K brakes were not allowed in interchange after 1953.

Joe.

Thanks a bunch. I found the info I was looking for earlier. AB brakes were developed and tested in the 20s. Became mandatory on NEW cars in 32. The K brakes were to be removed from interchange in 43. The war and restrictions on material the date was pushed back to 53.

I guess I can keep the K brakes on a couple flats I am detailing with an oversize load.

Coincidentally, railroads became much less modelgenic about the time K brakes were frowned upon for interchange.
