CNW

The Pennsy and the memories of the keystone on the old LIRR steamers.

SP’s grimey, faded, lumpy SD9s, 10mph, run8, 1.2% grade in drag freight were a soul stirring expirience. Same could be said for the 45s.

“Mr. Conductor, take me down the line-ridin’ the blinds.” Ridin’ the Blinds; Lonnie Mack.

Grand Trunk Western, and Detroit, Toledo, & Ironton

I vote for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Yes, I miss the SP, but I also miss the Erie Lackawanna and its predecessor Erie, and the Wellsville, Addison & Galeton (WAG).

My fallen flag was the old Norfolk Southern before the merger with the Southern RR.Never got the chance or lived near where it ran did’nt grow up in NC but still liked it.Where I grew up was the Seaboard Coast Line so that would a possible choice for a fallen flag.Rode it 2 times near the end of passenger service.Did get to see a lot of FEC growing up and still see it today.

Mine will always be the Jersey Central, aka “The Big Little Railroad”.
I lived the earliest part of my life in Bayonne, NJ, half a block from the CNJ mainline. I still remember the eastbound 5:56 (pm) out of E 33rd being one of the last of the commuters to be powered by steam.
Then came the double-headed cab diesels, the Train Masters, F3’s, GP7’s, RDC’s. What more could a boy ask for?
Also The B&O and Reading are way up on my list. We used to stand on the footbridge that spanned the tracks and that thing used to shake like an earthquake when the B&O and the Reading came thundering through there. Scary and fun at the same time.
Not to forget the Pennsy and Lehigh Valley which weren’t far away.
Loved it all and miss it terribly.

Being an IC kid I would say I miss the GP-40’s hauling down the mainline. Wow what a sight. Don’t even get me started on the wonderful products of Paducah!

My Favorie fallen fflag is the Boston and Mainie. One note about anothe fallen flag Is about the Baltimore and Ohio RR the president of the B and O cut hours about 5 hours per week during the great depression to avoid layoffs of any workers

Ithink that penn central was the greatest fallen flag. Granted I never was able to see it in its prime, but with the variaty of paint schemes and locomotive builders and models it was something that ment more to me then any of the other fallen flags
