Wheel squeak in my G scale Christmas train

I’ve set up a small Christmas train under my tree. The wheels are squeaking against the track. Does anyone have any idea how to stop it? Thanks.

Hello,
I use standard plastic compatible oil like “ LaBelle” or Woodland Scenics available at your train store on the ends of the axles where they spin in the truck frame. Alternatively, a friend used powdered graphite, like you would use to lubricate a key lock, but this may drop and stain in an indoor environment. I would suggest to try the hobby oil.

I use La Belle on my HO scale locomotives.

Great stuff!

In addition to oiling the axle ends, I have found that it helps to oil ONE of the tracks. On tight curves with both wheels fixed to the axle, the outside wheel has to travel further than the inside wheel on a (sharp) curve, setting up a vibration. On cars like Annie and the bobber caboose with metal axle supports this can e a verry loud squeal. Oiling one of the tracks seems to reduce or silence this completely.

Welcome to the forum, Rushbury_Valley!

I think you are probably correct concerning the original poster’s question. It sounds like the wheels were not making noise on the ends, but rubbing on the track.

Against the track – use dry graphite.

The B’Laster company makes graphite lube in a spray can with the usual sort of ‘straw’ for fine application, but of course with graphite any ‘overspray’ is likely to be somewhat unfortunate… I’d mask with tape and dropcloth.
