Anyone have a good source of relatively cheap polystyrene.
If you’re looking for sheet styrene for building structures, etc., check your yellow pages under plastics. I found I could buy a 4 X 8 FOOT sheet of 1/16" styrene for around $35 !!! Helluva deal !!! I’m working through my second one already.
Mark.
Do you mean sheets of styrene? Or are you interested in shapes, like girders and tubes?
Evergreen and Plastruct make modeling products, which include things like clapboard siding for scratchbuilding. These are really nice, and give you a nice option for structures. They also make flat sheets in various sized, but those are really expensive on a per-square-foot basis. It’s a lot cheaper to go to Wal-Mart and buy a For Sale sign. You’re going to paint it anyway, right?
I ordered a couple of big sheets of styrene from www.usplastic.com, the Rubbermaid people. A piece 40 inches by 72 inches of 0.030 is just $7.93. (That’s 20 square feet.) I did a quick check at an online supplier of Evergreen, and they had 2 6x12 inch sheets for $2.35. That’s 1 square foot. I bought 2 sheets 2 years ago, and I’ve still got half a sheet left. I use it for all sorts of things, too. If you can find a plastics distributer, you might be able to drive over and pick up a sheet, and save on shipping.
Yo, smitty…
Just read this in another thread…for a source of cheap styrene, check out “For Sale” signs at Walmart.
Here’s a link to that other thread:
A buddy and I was at Wal-Mart the other day and noticed their advertising signs thru out the store were actually Styrene. About 1/16 inch thick and approx 20 in by 12 inches. You see them all over Wal-Mart with the price smiley face and prices etc. Anyway my buddy asked a manager if they had any in the back that they were gong to throw away. After about five minutes he came back with two of them. Other than a little dusty they are great pieces of free styrene. They come in black and in white.
