Where do you buy your shrink wrap?

Now that Raido Shack is gone, where do you folks buy Shrink Wrap? I bought the smallest they had a Lowes and it is way to big. If I have to buy on line, what sizes do I need? I use it when I add LED’s or hard wire a decoder. Any ideas where I might find it locally?

Thanks in advances.

I let my shrink buy his own wrap. He makes enough money and can afford it.

I buy mine at home depot

Boooo…

Ken:

I buy mine at a shop that specializes in Model Planes and Drones. I’ve also found it at my local hobby shop. I beleive that you can get it at MicroMark.

Hello all,

I went to NTE Electronics, Inc.

Look under the Heat Shrink tab on the left.

I bought:

  • 3/64-inch, Thin Wall; Red & Black, for decoder wire (30g) installation
  • 1/16-inch, Thin Wall; Red & Black, for decoder & resistor installation
  • 3/32-inch, Thin Wall; Red & Black, for multiple wire connections & resistor installation
  • 3/16-inch, Thin Wall; Red & Black for buss & feeder wire installation

You might also find Liquid Electrical Tape helpful for other electrical joints.

And finally, Kapton tape will round out your insulation needs.

Hope this helps.

Auto parts store.

Ebay - Those China sellers practically give it away and free shipping to boot ! I have drawers full of the stuff !

I bought 100’ roll of 1/8" heatshrink about 3 years ago and I think I have used maybe 5’-8’ so far. It was a whole $15.00. I also have some 3’ lengths of off colors such as green, red, blue, yellow and white for specialty use that I got at my local electronics shop. I got the roll of heat shrink there too.

I bought mine through Digi-Key. As for sizes, jjdamnit’s suggestions are right on, although I very occassionally use larger sizes.

Liquid electrical tape is good for places where the heat shrink tubing won’t go. Just be aware that the shelf life is limited. Don’t buy it by the gallon.

The Wood River store didn’t get the message.

Radio Shack? What is this Radio Shack you speak of?

Heh heh, way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a teenager, it was one of my favorite stores and I used to enjoy browsing thier catelog more than a kid would the “wish book”. Well, that was a very long time ago in a galaxy far far way. The radio shack of my youth is a distance memory and that the OP sure jogged my memory. Haven’t walked in one like that in a very long time. Thanks for the memories! Yeah, other vendors have totally taken over things I used to go to RS for back in the 70’s and 80’s.

Radio Shack was the new kid on the block when I was hanging around with my dad on a Saturday afternoon…

We had Lafayette Electronics, Allied Electronics, Olson’s all in one block and down the street was a Heathkit store! Talk about a kid in a candy shop!

I wish I could bottle all the smells wafting around the aisles, too! Anyone remember opening a fresh box of 1/4" recording tape and savoring the aroma? [yeah]

Regards, Ed

I can still get what I use at Home D., Menards, actually, all of the BBS, are relatively close, and also the local “Do-It-Best” store. All of the chain stores have it, as I’ve seen it in “True Value” and “Ace”.

Ken,

Radio Shack Did Not go anywhere…they just closed a lot of their stores…especially the non-productive one’s. Here are some near You: Just type in Your Zip Code. You can still order direct on-line to Radio Shack…should You so choose to do so.

Home Depot, Menard’s, Wal-Mart distribute’s GB (Gardner Bender) Heat Shrink tubing, that comes in a convienient plastic case, with all sizes, that You would need for Model Railroading or any other project.

Take Care! [:D]

Have you considered Harbor Freight? They are apparently a great place for buying various electronic supplies, workshop tools, etc. I should go there soon to get a the shrink stuff and a volt meter.

Yes, HD is a great option also.

Ken, I assume you mean heat shrink for wiring. I get mine at AllElectronics

Thanks for all the answer folks.

What sizes does Home Depote carry, I did not see 1/64th on the site?

Thanks Again, Ken
