While I can find cork roadbed sections in HO, the Midwest cork sheets seem to be in short supply. Walthers has them listed as backordered. Does Home Depot, Lowes, Michaels or anyone else sell any kind of cork sheet of the about the same thickness as the regular roadbed that could be used as a roadbed for yards? Thanks - Nevin
Hobby Lobby craft stores carry them.I buy them in 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch thick rolls. Here’s a helpful tip. You can sign up with Hobby Lobby crafts stores and get emailed a printable discount coupon they issue by the week. Sometimes it is for 40% off any item in the store, and you can use one a day.Comes in handy for train stuff!

Yeah I would go with Hobby Lobby.
I happened to ask a question in this forum about whether or not to use roadbed, particularly cork. One of the (helpful) responses I got was go to Michael’s craft store. There is also A.C. Moore, which I presume would be considered a competitor to Michael. I have one of each in my area. These would be sheets, not necessarily pre-sized stuff for HO roadbed.
I buy bulletin board cork sheet at Wal-Mart. It’s just the right thickness for HO roadbed use. It’s also handy for use in wiping down the track.
[#ditto] I use those to make all my switch pads. 4 pack of 12"x12" squares for around $5.
Home improvement stores sell it for flooring aplications too in roll form.
check out McMaster-Carr
Type in “cork”, then look at the sheets. This might do.
They accept credit card.
Nevin,
I found some a while back at Staples (24 x 48"? - 1/8" thick) for ~$6. It’s made by Contact and comes with the peel-away backing so that you can just stick it right down onto your layout table. I plan on using it to make roadways.

I tried looking on their website, but they have no listing for “Contact” brand, and the cheapest I found was a pack of (4) 1 foot squares for $22.99
I got some 1/4 inch cork sheets at Michaels, that I used for switch pads. I forget the price, but it was cheap, or I wouldn’t have bought it. I think most craft stores would have it. I bought some at another craft store, but it was rolled, and wrapped in cellophane. I had to unroll it and put some weights on it for a week to get it to lay flat.
Try out these guys http://www.corkdirect.com/ 800-344-2675.
I bought a roll. Not only do I have most any size I want for yards, industries, turnout pads and and so on…I now cut all my own roadbed too.
This been a major savings.
Yep…same stuff I got at Michael’s. I think it might have been closer to $7 but I can’t recall without digging out the receipt. I did all of the roadbed for my small (4’x1’) n-scale shelf and still have probably 3/4 of the roll left. I think you could use a couple of layers for HO. Still testing but I think it’ll also work for roads, small elevation changes, and such.

I also used Cork Direct. I bought a 1/4" thick roll for mainlines, and a 1/8" thick roll for all other trackage. It’s was a VERY economical purchase, tough a bit pricey at the start. If you don’t need that much, maybe you can get with some other modelers and split the cost.
Hi,
I just returned a 2x4 foot roll to Lowes yesterday as I overbought. They want $7.50 per roll here in the Houston area. Office supply stores and independent hardware stores are about $15 for the same roll.

Nearly every store that sells flooring, such as a large Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc., has cork underlayment in rolls. Take a piece of roadbed with you so you know the thickness to get, and you can probably find what you need sold by the foot or yard.
I cut all of my own cork roadbed from sheets. I buy mine at a Sutherlands store. Many building supply and flo/8oring store carry it, although my local Lowes quit carrying it a couple of years ago. I save a ton of $$$ this way and prefer the rsults over commercially cut cork which is always too wide.
