Where to get a certain worm gear and driveshaft?

Well I have a problem right now.

I have an athearn GP35 that I got a Buehler can motor into with flywheels. I test fitted the worms and driveshafts from a P2K SD9 and it worked perfectly. So I figured I could get some from Walthers, but they told me it’s only available for warranted repairs.

I know that the worm assembily from a P2K or an Athearn would work, but finding the right driveshaft is the hard part. I can get pics of it later, but the part that goes into the motor is similar to the way the newer hex-line athearns drive shafts connect to the part with the worm gear.

So anyone know of where I could get a set of worm gears and driveshafts and whatever else would be on these that will work for my purpose?

MICRO-MARK might have something that will work for you.

See: http://www.micromark.com/ and search for their items 83290 or 83485. These are square drives, not hex.

Also, the latest Athearn SD40-2 has a hex drive. I can look up the part numbers tomorrow if you want (it’s late now). Further, the previous version of the Athearn SD40-2 also had the hex drive. I can look up the part numbers for that tomorrow as well. Note that the parts for the newer SD40-2s look similar to the drives for the Athearn Genesis SD70M parts shown at http://www.hoseeker.org/assemblyexplosionAthearn/athearngenesisSD70m75mpg05.jpg, but I don’t know if the part numbers are the same. I think the Genesis engine came with a better motor, maybe even a Buehler (but I don’t know that for a fact). The only reason I mention this is that the typical Atheran motor has a larger diameter shaft than the better motors.

Anyway, I will look up the SD40-2 part numbers tomorrow if you think that would be helpful. Let me know.

Micromark 83485 loks like it’ll fit the bill as far as driveshafts.

And from that HOseeker link, looks like the worms from the athearn Sd40-2 will fit the bill. Although If I could get ones from an RTR GP35, I know that wouldd work.

So, okay, it’s morning and I found the part lists for both Athearn SD40-2s. The first part list I have is from the latest version ready to roll (RTR) SD40-2, and the second is from the previous version (which was an upgrade from the original upgrade which was an upgrade from the original!). Anyway, I’ll call the last upgrade the 6400 series engines.

Both the RTR and the 6400 series use the same motor, flywheel, hex drive shaft, and worm assembly. The motor is Athearn part number 84070, the flywheel 95000, the drive shaft 48060, and worm assembly 34128.

From the drawing it appears that the socket for the drive shaft at the motor end is either an insert contained as part of the flywheel, or a hex machined into the flywheel itself. (I didn’t take the engine apart to look.)

The 34128 worm assembly consists of two bearings (40052), worm and shaft (40062), and a female coupling (48061). The female coupling is where the truck end of the drive shaft inserts. There are also two thrust washers. The washers in the RTR are part number G62021, and the washers in the 6400 series are part number 48062.

Note that both engines use the same worm housing cover, part 40053. This is the plastic cover that contains the worm and bearings on the top of the truck. So, if you can find the part list for the GP-35 you have, and it has the same housing cover part number, I think you can be pretty sure that the worms and stuff should be interchangeable.

Oh, and remember that the SD40-2 part list at the HOseeker site is for an earlier version than the 6300 series. But you can at least look there to see if the housing covers have the same part number.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Regards!
