I have the red box versions, don’t know if they’re pre 1993 or not. I’ve emailed Kadee to try and find out,but it’s the weekend and all… can you recommend a conversion with all parts (I’d like to use whisker couplers if possible so’ not to deal with springs, box parts, etc.)?
I have both 4 wheel trucks and 6 wheel trucks.

Kadee’s,website,shows the #508,for four wheel trucks and #505,for six wheel trucks,they say they are #5.s,no mention,of any other…

LION has used Kadee on his Riverossi cars, it does take some work, but, McHenry makes a direc replacement, just pull the old one off and push the new one on. Other issues apply. LION does not run those cars anymore, although they will appear in a static display. All of LION’s train now use solid draw-bars.

I just checked one of my 60’ Rivarossi cars and the couplers are not attached directly to the trucks.The couplers, which are fairly long, are attached to the body of the car to some sort of cam.
These cars came with knuckle couplers and I have never had to replace any.
The couplers look like McHenry couplers.
If you get an answer from Kadee could you please share it with us and post it, eventually I will need to replace some of the couplers.on my 60’ Rivarossi.

All of which raises the question, why would you want to switch out the centering springs and couplers for whisker couplers.
On all of my 60’ Rivarossi paasenger cars, the factory installed coupler assemblies work just fine.
If you do decide to use the #505 and #508 conversion kits, these kits include draft gear boxes, #634 centering springs, and #5 metal couplers. So, the centering spring and #5 coupler can be swapped out for the #148 metal whisker coupler.

#58 is a scale coupler replacement for a #5 coupler, but it is not a whisker coupler. The #148 is a whisker coupler, but it is a standard coupler, not scale.

My original response,was to give him the #'s to the conversion kits,for a four wheel truck and a six wheel truck,#505 and #508,they come with a pair of #5.s in the kits and you can use a #58,or a #148 whisker,with the kits,INstead of the #5…I rest MY case…

The conversion kits quoted earlier in this post are for the older full length heavyweights (86 ft) that had the couplers truck mounted. These do not work with the 60 footers. The 60ft cars can use a Kadee #5 and I believe they will fit directly in the box.
Also looks like we get some new roadnames on these cars pretty soon; and also the RPO and combine will to be back available too.
Checking the Hornby/Rivarossi USA site the new railroad names are the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, both in the two tone gray scheme, New York Central and Santa Fe. the original release was the NWC and the Pennsy and the pullman green unlettered cars.
If you compare the Rivarossi cars to the new Con Cor Suburban passenger cars you will see that they are nearly the same length.
I have both and I would take the Con-Cor cars over the Rivarossi coaches, Con-Cor come with lighting. Otherwise they are almost identical. Con-Cor do cost less though.l

I’ll mull this thread over in the meanwhile. The original couplers work fine except that I need to shim them as they’re all at different (floppy) levels and I have a lot of the shorties. I have steep grades (3%) and want to go to all Kadees on all cars if possible. Metal couplers for sure.
I had forgotten about McHenry’s having a direct drop in replacement. I can’t remember if the McHenrys will play well with Kadees or not and will read the thread mentioned above. These cars will be my lst coupler jobs ever and would like to keep shimming, spring chasing, etc. to a minimum while I learn.
Did Rivarossi make diners, observation cars, sleepers in 60’ shorty versions? I alway see the coach, p.o., baggage and combine sets on ebay but not any other cars.
I’m going off on a boat trip tomorrow for a few days so won’t be able to respond until I get back. Thanks for the help as always.

As to the Rivarossi and also the Walthers Trainline 60’ passenger series, you did not see any diners, observation or sleeping cars as they were not produced in the 60’ series.
However, if you check out Con-Cor’s suburban coaches you will see that they offer a Solarium
HW car, this is an observation car with the open area filled in with windows.
You will find the Con-Cor Suburban cars are a near match for the older Rivarossi and Walthers 60’ cars and they are available in most of the roadnames released by Rivarossi.
The Union Pacific is one of their road names, but the livery is the two tone grey.
I have bought extra coaches and solariums for all of my Rivarossi 60’ passenger sets.
