Whither Jim Six and Larry Puckett?

Was going through some past issues of MR and thinning the herd due to reasons not germane at the moment. Saw a couple of author’s names that seemed to have disappeared. Jim Six and Larry Puckett were two of the more memorable ones. Used to see their byline in Model Railroading mag for a long time and was jazzed when I saw them writing for Model Railroader. But I’ve not seen them in MR for a couple of years. I don’t get any of the other mags except for the occasional RMC. Are they still around? Jim Mansfield was another but I know he passed to that great layout in the sky some time back.

I have not seen a lot from Larry, but Jim Six is very active on the Atlas HO Forum - He moved, built a new houese and is very busy building a NYC layout…

Jim

Jim Six is active over on the Railroad Lines Forum. Kevin

Jim Six wrote some of the best articles on diesel detailing I have ever read. Too bad he never appears in MR anymore. To me that is one of the most enjoyable parts of the hobby.

Jim

jackn2,

Jim Six also posts on NYC-Historical group at Yahoo Groups.

He does fantastic engines in NYC. [wow]

I recall Jim Six expressing displeasure on his yahoolist about MR editing out important historical and technical information from his last articles in MR. He was unhappy about it and stated he was going sell his articles to other magazines.

He has only had one article in MR since then.

Jim is one of those guys that can take a pretty plain model and turn it into a gem. He also has the ability to write up his project in such a way that even a 10 thumbed guy like me can say ‘wow i can do that.’ Interesting that he’s doing NYC now. I remember him doing quite a bit of Penn Central and then I think he turned to the ACL SBD etc railroads.

The other thing that impressed me was the sheer volumes of articles he seemed to be able to put out. WOW.

The guy was/is a genius at detailing to the nines. Used to look forward to his articles all the time. I sincerely doubt that MR wants to get into that level of in-depth work again, which is a shame, because they used to many years back.

I wonder if he ran afoul of some of the establishment (e.g. Koester) at MR? I see in a prior post in this thread that he was not happy about MR cutting out some of the historical info he provided. So he’s taken his work elsewheres. More’s the pity.

i can’t mr anymore … what are you doing w/ your old ones? haha i am interested haha lol :]

I think Jim Mansfield is alive and well however his wife Margaret died some years ago. I’m basing this on the fact that the Jersey Western Railroad web site is still up and appears to be current.

I’m still around–after Model Railroading ceased I spent a few years winding down my real career then in 2010 retired to Asheville NC. I am building a new Southern Railway inspired layout and have started writing for Model Railroader so you’ll soon be seeing more of me–Larry Puckett

Larry,

LOL. [#welcome] To The Forum’s. [:D]

You don’t know me…but I know about You.

God willin’, if I’m around…will be looking forward to Your article’s.

Getting up there in age, 72.

Take Care! [:D]

Gotta love thread resurrections like this one! Welcome, Larry.[:D]
