By this I mean in terms of the whole railroad (from track/signals all the way locomotives to facilities)?
You’d almost certainly have to give those honors to the Florida East Coast.
Of the big railroads, probably NS, followed by BNSF and UP (roughly a tie), CP, CN, and CSX.
I’m sure I’d get plenty of disagreement on that, though.
You mean that CSX isn’t #1? [banghead]
I would have to put NS and BNSF in a tie for 1st, CP and UP in a tie for 2nd, then CN, and finally CSX. KCS would be in there somewhere between CP/UP and CN.
Count me in for BNSF, and NS
FOFLMAO…

I would say BNSF first and NS a close second. I know little about the CP so I can’t place them in the order. While the UP’s mainline from Chicago west to California is in great shape the KCS is better overall than the UP and is certainly superior to the CN’s former ICG lines. CSX wins last place hands down.

I would say NS is #1 followed by BNSF.
They are not going to win for quality of physical plant but I doubt if any railroad keeps its locomotives more shiny clean and new looking than the Wisconsin & Southern RR. Even though this is their official website I can tell you this is really what their roster looks like day in and day out.

Metra cough cough [:-^]
For the main railroads I’d say BNSF and NS are tied for first place, UP second.
Lets see,
Amtrak? Don’t think so…

Not UP

Not BNSF

NS? Nah

CSX? Give me a break…

For me, its Metrolink

or the Trona shortline
Before the CN takeover the answer would be DM&IR. The shop floors in Proctor looked clean enough to eat off of.
Sorry, Doesnt count, Not due to Metrolink neglect, that was intentionally caused by a complete and total idiot who even as we speak is on his 437th “honeymoon” in prison.[:O] [:O] [:O]
Good riddence to him.

Back in the early 70s,I was told by a Sperry Rail employee, who had just given me a tour of his railcar, that UP had the best maintained roadbed.
So it seems that CSX is the unanimous choice for the worst kept. Which of their lines are the best kept and which are the worst? And what need to be done to get them up to the levels of the other Class 1’s?
CSX has no deferred maintenance. It’s simply compensating for the overmaintenance inflicted on the lines by previous owners.
Their method of maintenance will make them look good sooner or later–they just have to be run into the ground, then they’ll be closed for a “blitz” and restored.
