Greetings all. I just came back in from a train running session out in my shop, and of all of my locos and rolling stock I always seem to come back to the Santa Fe Super Chief… In fact I don’t feel right anymore unless it’s on the track. Does anyone else out there have this problem of being stuck on one favorite train that stands out above the rest ?.
Your not alone. I find it rather enjoyable knowing I have an AMC Berkshire somewhere, anywhere on hand when I do have a layout up and running. PM preferred, but NKP, C&O, or RF&P versions are just as welcome.
Interesting note: the SF warbonnet scheme on the F units is the bug that bit me into railroading. Dog gone fine livery - so I can see why you have to have it. I dont own any SF equipment but i have to say it is just a mesmerizing paint scheme to look at!
Same here! My Dad gave me a Lionel 2-6-2 for Christmas which was better than Great but . . . . three years later my next door neighbor got a dual Lionel F series Santa Chief, that was the most impressive train I’d ever seen. When we moved to El Paso the Santa Fe Chief was overtaken the SP Cab Forwards.

I have 2 favorite trains to run, depending if I want to run a freight or passenger. My freight train is my dedicated 18 car TTX box car train powered by a Kato SD90MAC or my LIRR World’s Fair train (4 passenger cars) powered by an Atlas C420. I grew up on LI, so it’s a favorite!
I once was a Santa Fe red warbonnet fan myself…but that was some time ago now…
My favorite train right now is really just one locomotive, pulling whatever freight cars. It’s a modestly sized W&R Soo Line 2-8-0, and I just enjoy the overall look of it and operating it on the layout (no sound, no smoke and just plain DC).
A friend is in the process of trying to get me another neat steam engine which would become my new favorite to run.
One of my favourite trains (if not the favourite one) is the famous Glacier Express, operated jointly by the Rhaetian Railway and the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, connecting St. Moritz and Zermatt in Switzerland.
I like this train so much I built an entire layout for it, albeit a small one.
I have no favorite train as such but,I have two favorite locomotives and use all 60 of my favorite freight cars.
The engine that I use 90% of the time is a BB SW1500 painted for Summerset Ry in the old ACL purple and silver scheme that I picked up on e-Bay. I added DCC sound,a none working beacon light, spark arresters,Atlas three chime horn, and upgraded to the newer RTR SW1500 drive and cab interior. My second favorite engine is a Atlas Classic SCL RS-3.
Two other favored locomotives is a Atlas SCL GP7 and a BB GP7 lettered for Family Lines. I picked up a Family Lines Athearn GP7 dummy at the Bucyrus train show last year and powered it with a GP7 drive that has a Kato motor. I found this used at the Berea Train show last fall for $12.00…
I could have saved a pile of money if I didn’t buy the other 38 locomotives since they’re seldom used.
I have 4 older brass locos that I like to run on my small DC layout. Each is a favorite for a different reason. I have finally decided that my favorite is the one that is currently in use.

My favorite locomotive will always be on the layout - a 762mm gauge Baldwin 0-4-2T, stufffed and mounted in front of the Haruyama station. After many years of faithful service, that little woodburner was exiled from the forest by government decree.
A little earlier today I ordered the 9mm gauge mechanisms (with N scale carbodies on top) that will be kitbashed into unlikely (but prototypical) diesels to replace her. The box cab will be easy, but the other…
Does anyone know where I can find a couple of HO scale Volksvans?
