Wierd Noise Never Heard This Loud Before, Is It Dynamic Braking?????

What makes it sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9qcmp4KaTA. Is is Dynamic Braking??? Some of the Comments below the video about a Tornado Siren is kind of lame because the sound goes along with the Engines as they pass. It’s no Tornado Siren, that’s for sure.

While it may be Dynamic Braking, it sounds more like a stuck horn control and only one or two of the higher pitched horn bells are working. While I have no idea of where this video was shot, I really would have expected the whine from Dynamic Braking to be somewhat lower in pitch…at least on all the DB’s I have heard.

Sounds like what is known as a “Howling” turbo. For whatever reason a very few locomotives have a turbocharger that makes an ungodly howl. Don’t think they are in dynamic based on engine exhaust and a horn should get louder as whichever unit goes by.

Soo Line 6010 had the same howl under load.

its that emd unit in dynamic is all nothing wrong

It sounds like normal dynamic braking in full force on a steep descent – nothing unusual or abnormal.

Dynamic brakes are rarely that loud, and if they were in dynamics, the GE would have contributed to the noise as well. I agree with the Boomer that it’s a turbo problem, since the noise falling and rising is not indicative of a dynamic brake application, either (usually would be more consistent in pitch, if not volume). That sounds like a throttle being repositioned.

The NS SD70’s are notorious for this noise. I’m not sure if its a problem but it is turbo related.

if it was turbo the engine would also be roaring instead everything is whining and the up and down nature your hearing is the unit dropping its load due to wheel slip. there nothing wrong with this unit SOP.

Sorry I have to respectfully disagree. Just had one of these units, they can make this noise while under load in notch 6-8 at speeds between 15-30MPH. Not all of them do it, and the same unit may not do it everytime during a trip. Its not in dynamic>
