I’m pretty sure the trademark ownership of the Conrail predecessors stayed with the parent companies. UP did their heritage thing in part to protect their trademark ownership. I agree with you on the EL scheme. It would be neat to see a couple of Dash9s in EL on a van train. A couple Cornell Red LV units would look pretty nice, too. The Reading and Northern is the place to go if you want to see ersatz Reading. (there is plenty of CNJ inspired stuff rolling around on short lines - a good place for it as the CNJ really wasn’t much more than a collection of shortlines and commuter trains)
In a situation similar to Reading and Northern, Pacific Harbor Line does a pretty good job of looking like the Santa Fe. Also consider the Southern Belle colors now being used by KCS.
IRM even touched up #8646 and #8701 by adding some new paint and making the C&NW paint job look more fresh. I wonder which locos will keep their paint job longer, the 2 C&NW C44-9Ws or C&NW heritage #1995? I heard a rumor that UP intends to keep these 2 locos in their original C&NW paint scheme unpatched and donate them to a rail museum when they’re retired. I guess this could be IRM considering the C&NW locos and other equipment they have, and UP donated a former C&NW SD40-2 to IRM last year too.
So does this mean that UP wants to keep some of the CNW Engines unpatched for Railfans and other reasons like Excursions possibly. About 4 Month’s ago I saw a Patched CNW AC4400CW in Perry Ohio on CSX V771. That was cool. Also, behind that engine there was a Patched SP Unit. BTW, How many SP Units are left out there, right now that are Unpatched?
Actually, it is not Rock Island. The 6th is Missouri Pacific (UP 1982).
And according to the 2008 Calendar from UP, 8444 (SD70ACe) is considered a heritage unit, as are the historical units 3985 and 844 (Challengers), the E-9 passenger diesel set (951, 949, and a B unit 963), and the "Centennial No. 6936. They also add in the United Way unit (UP 3300, an SD40), The Torch Relay for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games units (UP 2001 and 2002, SD70Ms), and the George Bush Presidential Library unit (UP 4141, an SD70M).
If you wish, you may hold your breaths. A train that usually runs through on CSX currently has UP 1995 as the trailing unit. Although the unit could be taken off at North Platte, or even Proviso, that is considered unlikely.
My favorite train…my favorite locomotive…and me not at work to check further! What a bummer!
I don’t know the real answer, but I would be willing to bet there are no UNpatched Espees left. And the number of patched SP units is probably dwindling, too.
There are still some Espee units running around out there unpatched, There is a hand full of AC4400s, and a few GP60s that I know of. There are even some SSW GP60s unpatched running around out there. Below are a few former SP units (both patched) that I have caught lately.
There are no more UNpatched D&RGW units on the UP roster after SD40T-2 5371 was retired and donated last year. There are still some patched D&RGW units running around however, like UP 1342 below. Also I posted a picture of SSW 9669 in Roseville, CA. Both as of April 2009.

SSW 9669 in Roseville:
UP 1342 in Roseville, still were it’s D&RGW livery.
UP does not own the 8646 or the 8701, they are lease units, so in order for them to get to IRM (which they might) it would be do to the generosity (or tax deduction) of the lease holder…
