wire gauge for 6019 uncoupler, 1121 remote switches

This should be an easy question but a search didn’t really turn one up. I’m working on a 4x8 layout for 1050’s vintage Lionel. The insulation on the wires on the uncoupler tracks and switches is pretty shot, and I need longer wires anyway. What gauge are the Lionel wires? What gauge would be appropriate for these?

Thanks, and I promise pictures if it works out well. I’ve got 3 more 6019’s coming from eBay, some bulbs to replace in the switches, and then track laying will be complete.

Jim,

I have a pair of 1121’s and it looks like they use either 20 or 22 gauge wire for the controller cables. You are right there is not much info out there. The Train Doctor sells 3 and 4 conductor wire and you might contact them. Here is a wiring diagram for the 1121’s from Olsens. I bet others here can give you the exact wire gauge if you want to make your own connectors. Good luck!

Mike

I would go with 18 gauge stranded wire as it has more capacity for current than 20 gauge. Home Depot, Lowes, or Radio Shack should have wire in three or four conductors.

For longer runs of wire, 18 gauge would be appropriate. For shorter runs, you can get by with 20 gauge.
