I am about to turn my layout from the plywood & pine rr. into scenes from Pennslyvania. I am thinking of using the WS forest canopy in fall colors and was wondering if anybody who has experience with the product could give me a few pointers on the plusses and minuses of using it. I have about 70 sq. ft. to cover and am open to other methods of getting the job done. This is the furthest I have gotten on a layout and don’t have a lot of experience with covering large areas with realistic eastern mountains. Any help would be appreciated.
I’ve never had any experience with this product, but if you’re trying to simulate Eastern mountain sides, etc. with their high density of trees this product might get expensive very fast since the ads I’ve seen for it state it will cover only approximately 2 squre feet of area. There are other less expensive methods to accomplish this, e.g., polyester fiber balls covered with various colors of groud foam from WS. Check the latest editon of Dave Frary’s book on scenery to see other ideas for producing large number of trees or the appearance of such.

Ive just started making some of them (the dark green ones), and they are pretty good but not great. the fall ones would probably be better as the brown crown kind of shows through on the green ones. however this would not be a good choice for 70 sq ft. that would require over 35 boxes, at maybe 20 dollars a box…Im sure theyre are more economical ways.however, I haven’t tried any others so I hope someone else could suggest a better alternative.
Before going too far into the forestry manufacturing, take a look at an entry by ARTHILL called “Learned something new about trees”. One can only say: WOW!
Did Allen McLelland really use the canopy stuff on his new V&O? His layout is the picture for their ads for the forest canopy stuff. I’ve never seen any actual pictures of the stuff anywhere… I’m really curious too.
do they offer anything to model Western or evergreen-type forests?
