I don’t know if I’d call it cheap, its for people that just dont have the money in their budget.

Too cheap???

Not cheap at all to use a library. A library is one of the most democratic of institutions we enjoy in this country. In my house, I have a personal library of over 3,000 books and countless issues of various magazines, in addition to many thousands of books I have for sale by my used book business. I still am a member of my local library and use it often because there is info that I need or want to know but have no need to own and store the book or magazine that contains it. It is ludicrous to think that every reader needs to own a personal copy of everything.

Thanks for posting the list even though according to your list, my local library doesn’t have it. Trains Magazine is a something that I look at occasionally when I visit a friend that subscribes to it and would probably read it on regular basis if my local library had a subscription. Not something I have a need to buy and store, though.

Northwestern University Library’s Transportation Section (Evanston, IL) Volume 1, Number 1 to Volume 64, Number 9.

The library is open to the general public to view any reference material.

Personally, having been a poor student myself once, I wouldn’t think any less of anyone I saw reading “Trains” in a public library. Rather, I would think of him or her as enlightened.

Can’t buy the Trains magazine until later because I am unemployed and now busy with my studing. Not cheap just poor. The only wealth I have right now is in my head and not in my wallet.

That is where I read trains. Some nice guy from Michigan donates all of his old magazines to Iowa State University, and we have all of them more than a year old for the past 20+ years. You should see that section of the library. There are magazines dating back to 1910 or before. They are a lot of fun to read, and see their predictions of the future of diesel. At the current subscription price, I won’t be subscribing anytime soon. $43 is not reasonable for this magazine. $25 and I would.

Thank you! I first “discovered” Trains in the M.I.T. library in Cambridge, MA when I was 12 or 13. [The library was open to the public - no I didn’t attend the university!]. It was fascinating skimming through all the old issues from the late 40’s and early 50’s. Less than a year after I discovered these magazines, the university donated the Trains archives to its model RR club, the “Tech Nickel Plate”.

An art teacher at the JR high brought in train and model RR magazines for the kids at the jr high library. good start for any railfan.
