Just turned on Fox news to see pics of two freight trains that hit at a 90 degree crossing. Looks like about 50 cars and 3 large locos thrown all over the place.
They said there where injuries but no deaths. (thank God)
Thats good no,one was hurt

Carl…
Im glad no one was hurt. I just have a question, When are people going to learn not to try to beat the train?
From the article it sounds and looks bad.

the railroads don’t want to spend the money to install positive train control technology. with it even if the train crew missed a red signal the train would stiil be brought to a safe stop. there is a very simple mechanical device called an automatic train stop that is wired in with the signal. when a signal is red it raises a mechanical arm 2 1/2" above the rail outside of the rail and engages a brake valve on a locomotive causing the brakes to go into emergency. this would stop trains from running out of sidings and hitting other trains from the rear or head on.
At least one Railroad is willing to spend the money: NORFOLK SOUTHERN, the best in safety.
The right link was posted above. It was a train, train wreck. Not a car train wreck. A UP hit an SP at a 90 degree crossing. Derailed 5 locos and 45 cars BIG TIME. 3 UP workers hurt but not seriousely.
REALLY glad to see a norfolk southern fan. i know a few yrs. ago BNSF went around and closed crossings that were dangerous or not neccesary
Ok folks if PTC works so *** good why isnt it running on all lines?
ATS PTC however you want to call it has been round a looooooooooooooooong time. it isnt a money issue as much as its a get it to work 100% of the time issue.
Coming from a rail heres the solution " PAY ATTENTION WHEN YOUR WORKING!!!" that simple easy to do. So with all this so called great PTC when will it be implemented to your cars? God knows more cars wreck on a daily basis compared to trains.
BTW UP used to have cab signals in their locos that once they changed to a more restrictive aspect a whistle would blow in the cab. If the engineer failed to acknowledge said whistle in 6 secs you got a full service penalty brake application. Hmmm sounds like a good idea. So why isnt it used anymore?Oh maybe cause it didnt work 100% of the time. PTC isnt the answer to the problem as history has shown us wrecks still occur and will occur no matter the technology.
Wont get in to the only reason NS has won gold medals every year, just ask any of their guys who have been limping around the yard witha sprained ankle why they never turned it in. Nuff said getting off the soap box. Happy Turkey day!
Thanks for the link.
