CAn anyone tell me what other engines will negotiate my 022 switches, ones without the notorious '“fat wheel”?
I really like the litho stuff like the M1000 but I have a feeling it won’t go through. Which Marx engines will make it?
The M10000 series won’t without replacing the motor, unfortunately.
The 1666 will, since it’s basically a plastic 666. But smoke comes out the sides too, on some of them, which is cool. The 333 and 1829 will. Most of the later plastic diesels will. Later versions of the litho #21 Santa Fe diesel will, but early ones won’t, so examine them closely for the fat wheel before buying. My #21 has the fat wheel.
Marx made a cheap plastic loco, the 400, which was an 0-4-0 unit for its cheapest sets. Some of the 400s had the double-reduction motor like the 666, but without smoke. A 400 with that motor is highly sought after, because it’s possible to put that motor in other units to cure the fat-wheel syndrome. Always, always, always look at cheap Marx 0-4-0s.
I agree with you, Marx is very cool stuff. It’s affordable and reliable.
no it really is supposed to come out the sides. I saw one at York. It has a spout kind of thing off to one of the sides underneath the loco that spews smoke. Pretty cool, but I wanted the die cast shell. maybe next time.
Mike is right. I’ve also heard of people buying a 1666 with a damaged shell to get the motor/smoke unit, and putting that into a 666 to get a side-smoking diecast loco. That’s another nice thing about Marx–the common stuff is inexpensive enough that you can do stuff like that without breaking the budget.
