Basically, I am trying to explain to someone that the additional length of the SD40-2 vs. the SD40 is evenly distributed between the front and rear platforms. The individual that I am discussing this with insists that all of the length was added to the rear porch.
I tried to point out that the SD40’s rear platform is more visually prominant than the front and whith the longer SD40-2 frame, this difference is even more pronounced. Unfortuantely, I don’t have any models available to me that I can photograph to illustrate what I’m saying, but am I not correct? Can anyone suggest where I can find photos or even documentation from EMD that bears this out?
To complicate matters, the size of the front porch of an SD40-2 will be affected by the length of the short nose, which had three options. The longer ones provided more room to house extra equipment such as that required for Locotrol.
I measured the distance from the front of the cab to the vertical face of the underframe for an Athearn SD40 and a Scale Trains SD40-2. As best I could.
The SD40-2 was 2" longer. That’s so close to zero (under the circumstances) I’m leaning towards “the same length”.
More to the point, an equal amount of length was NOT added at each end.
