You might want to see this--"UP Locomotive Moves to Air on TV"

That was a good show. It looked scary for a bit when one of the dolly’s broke hauling the Big Boy over the tracks. Also impressing was seeing the Big Boy’s face peek over the hill. Could you imagine driving the opposite direction and seeing that [:0] coming right at you[?] Hauling the depot was good too.

They could’ve been more prepared in moving the Centennials’ trucks. Did you see the chain snap when the catapiller tried to move it[?] [V]

Take care,

Russell

how meny thought that guy on the roof was going to get shot off the roof like a slingshot when he was moveing the wires

LOL, I did, and did you notice that they used a DD35 instead of a 40X for the diagrams, i thought that was kinda funny. Glad to see a railroad program on once and a while.

I found it interesting that the guy from the company moving the depot in Deming, NM said the depot was between Union Pacific and Southern Pacific tracks. I guess he meant UP and BNSF.

The show just finished in Pacific Time and was pretty good. I have gotten off of a lot of the TLC and History Channel shows because they are usually so slow paced, but this one moved right along (you should pardon the expression). My wife even sat through it and almost enjoyed it.

Nice how the power utility in NM didn’t bother to show up to raise the wires along the interstate. I guess since they were probably blocking I-10 at that point, somebody from law enforcement reminded them to get their cherry pickers out there.

All in all, a pretty entertaining hour.

Regret it was not on TLC in Florida last nite. [:(]

Very interesting program, CW & I really enjoyed watching it!

…Sounds like one I would have liked to see…I watch a lot of these type of shows on these channels but knew nothing of what you folks are talking about…Bummer.

I watched and taped it last night. Very, very good! I enjoyed it thoroughly! It was really something to see just how much work it takes to move these things. It was a real eye-opener. You certainly can’t get stressed out too easily when you have a job like that!

I saw it and kept wanting to tell the narrator who kept calling them trains, “Those are ENGINES, you nimrod!!”

The part I found hairy was watching moving crew member get under the lifts to see if everything was going OK. The idea of a Big Boy dropping or tipping over on me just freaks me out.

Otherwise, it was a pretty good show.

Jay, I was going to say the same thing about the narration. The examples cited above (trackage ownership in Deming, “train”, etc.) just further demonstrate the everyday ignorance that most people have about the subject of railroads and railroading.

I actually think either of those moves would have rated a show to themselves.

Did anyone else notice that it was the same dispatcher working with both operations? Yeah, right!

my 4 year old grandson had to call me and tell me about the program.

dd

And Hemphill thought HE had a heavy workload. LOL

However, they did show brief shot of Demming and Omaha on the CTC board. So they got that part correct.

I turned it on just in time to see a couple of Mack trucks with their front ends up in the air & going nowhere trying to pull the Big Boy up a hill. Thought I was still watching the X Games on ESPN for a second! Somebody made the comment about driving downhill & seeing the Big Boy comming up the hill at you. Imagine if something went wrong on the last big hill and the Big Boy went back down the hill out of control(runaway!)? Any driver ( [D)] ) coming up the hill would not only have a [:O] look on their face but some
soiled shorts ( [dinner] ) as well. And yes, I did enjoy the show.

CC

That’s exactly what I was thinking. The definition of a train kept popping into my head. “One or more engines coupled, with or without cars, displaying a marker, and authorized to operate on a main track.”

That part with the two Mack trucks up in the air was one of the best parts of that show!!! I was also alittle worried about that guy up on the roof of the depot. I wonder how they found out that the lines weren’t hot. I personally would of been a little nervous going up there not knowing if the lines were hot or not. In moving the depot they ran into another problem, they ran into high tension power lines on the expressway.

One thing that suprised me was that it took a whole day to move the Big Boy across the tracks over in Omaha. They only got about what five yards or so. I was sure UP wasn’t too happy about them occupying the line for that length of time. But hay I guess the whole reason why UP hired them was to get some publicitly and to get their special equipment moved. lol.

…From the photos I saw of the movement across the tracks they got into serious trouble when the crushed several bogies…

They cleard the UP with no problem,It’s when they where trying to cross the BNSF when thier bogie snapped off. It was BNSF’s Omaha Sub. Allan.

I found the inaccuracies okay, I was able to shrug them off and still enjoy the show, but some times it did become annoying. I really enjoyed the show all in all.

…Wish it would repeat and I’d know about the time the next time…Sounds like an interesting program moving such a mass of weight some distance and across some obstacles.
