2008 [PART 2] and the Coffee Pot is still on and now 4 years old. Here we gather as friends with trains. Sweet ice tea too.

Should be easy to find all the brightly colored eggs the Easter Bunny will hide on the lawn.

Hey guys. Been a while since I last posted any updates on the layout…cant even remember my last post in here. Weather has been pretty good in NJ lately. No snow here. Havent had much time lately to work on the trains but all has been well. Got back to working again; this time for the water dept. Also excited the buckeyes got that QB Pryor from pennsylvania.

Hope everyone has a good holiday!

Thanks for the snow, Bob. Probably 6 inches here with more overnight - happy spring indeed - Mel, it was cold in our house this morn too - because it was 28 outside. Sigh. I did my boy scout good deed and cleared off the neighbor’s driveway. Off to church tonight - they have a neat service with lots of different rooms and different reflective experiences in each one.

The van saga continues: instead of coolant leaking through an easily replacable gasket, its also leaking through a pitted ‘container’ that is astronomically expensive just by itself - Big Boy expensive. So they’re going to see if they could machine up a cover that would be much cheaper. Good thing the daughter is gone because I wont see this vehicle until the middle of next week. Must. Run. Trains.

Brent;

In regards the new GP-7’s. The non-powered units really are dummies in every sense of the word. No lights, no smoke unit, no electro couplers, and all this paired with a locomotive that has everything!!! LEGACY won’t do a thing with them. Still plannning to get the LEGACY unit on the track tonight. Report later.

Hello everyone was shocked to see the pot locked but was relieved by Bergie’s post.[wow] 4 years hope to be around for the next for years[bow]

Finally got into the train room and started to work with the new Lionel GP-7. Some LEGACY things I learned:

  1. If you are going to change the ID #, do it before you load the memory module. Otherwise, you have to repeat the process.

  2. Track power should not be on while you are loading the module.

  3. If you decide to change the number after already loading the module and you have run the locomotive for a while, watch out for hot smoke oil coming out if you have to turn the engine upside down to get to the PRGM switch.(As in Duh!!!)

  4. The LEGACY control with a LEGACY engine is incredibly smooth. The horn is fun to play with and it is fun to listen to the brakes squeal if you turn the speed dial all the way to zero and kick in the locomotive brake.

  5. The ability to change smoke levels at the press of a key is a nice feature.

More later if I pick up any other bright ideas or learn anything else of interest.

Hey guys! Sorry to hear your bad news continues, Doug… Took wife out to eat, big steak dinner, but our daughter got carsick so we couldn’t go to a movie with our friends. Hi, John W! RRC/Mel, thanks for the updates - I’m thinking about that Legacy, maybe for my next birthday?

Train station kit showed up - it’s even a little bigger than I expected. Will have to pick up some epoxy tomorrow after I work in the morning, but hope to get some work done on it tomorrow.

Doug, we’ve got cookie-cake. Maybe grab Kurt and Sir James and some banilla and head over here? Use your snow shoes! Also, wear a life vest - flooding all around us, but we are high and dry here!

Evening All

Well the Chewy curse got us again. the snow headed right at us and started about five hours ago. Looks like Cleveland and some of Pa. will get it too. Oh well I had no going away plans for tomorrow anyway. Had a nice lunch after the church service today, they had sloppy joes, different kinds from different households, salads, you know the leafy kind plus the tater, noodle, etc. Pastor and wife sat with us and I invited him and his son over to see the trains. But I have done that before and so far,a no show. I guess I’ll look around and stop back before bed…later,S.J.

Not a full moon, so can’t blame Chewy, I think it’s the Snohioans?

I’m not so sure, that dog is out to get me.

Your own fault - stop eating our of her bowl! [(-D] She does like that peanut butter, though! Bring some of that, and you’ll have her eating our of your palm [(-D]

Gotta get up early, so TTFN

Buckeye…I hope you never have, to have, your tonsils taken out.

Chuck # 3
I found my thrill on Blueberryhill !!

The Dr. Pepper just came shooting out of my mouth and nose and all over the keyboard. Great one, Chuck. [:D]

GregM,

Read your post and had to laugh because it’s so true. You read the job description and then start shaking your head. It’s like whoever wrote it was smoking something grown in Rolesville (sorry, Chief). The qualifications and skill sets required are so numerous and spread across so many sub disciplines that it would take two or three people combined over a lifetime to have them all, spread out over 10 companies to boot.

Then you get to the part where it says: minimum 10 years experience. And then the salary offered is an insult. How could someone possibly get solid experience in all of this stuff in just 10 years? They couldn’t. And if they could, they’d be worth a lot more than the salary range for the position.

My wife has done corporate recruiting among other things. I help her refine job descriptions. I routinely question her about the descriptions she is posting for openings. “What individual in your organization has or had every one of these qualifications and skill sets? They got them in 10 years? I assume it’s the current hiring manager because he/she has them all, right? Dear, if someone responds saying they’ve got them all, they are either lying or have the same sense of humor your hiring manager has.”

Don’t get hung up on pie-in-the-sky lists of qualifications and skill sets. You need to find out which are “must have” game breakers versus “would like to have.” Even some of the “must haves” seem to mysteriously disappear once you get in the door. Don’t be afraid to politely but firmly ask either the in-house recruiter contact (preferable) or the search firm (they won’t know or will be afraid to ask their client).

Bob, moving this weekend. [:-^][(-D]

Gracious. Reclinerized after dinner [eastern NC pork Bar-be-que, fried chicken, cole slaw and brunswick stew].

Buckeye, I will give you a real deal on removing your tonsils. Won’t use the big Gerber I keep sharpened on my belt. I have a very sharp pointed Puma that is razor sharp [I carry all the time, except flying, in my pocket]. Think that will work better. A fifth or Dewars should work great for you [and me] so you will fill no pain.

Brent, guess you will have to remind us old guys to change the post. But then you will ask Fife to remind you and he fits with us OLD guys. [:-^]

Time to crash. Am glad to see Shake and Bake is doing better.

God bless.

Morning all. Wish bergie would just tell us hey need to close this on and start a new one so chief could add a link to the new one and we could move on. I guess maybe we ought to look into opening a new one say every 3 or 4 months as I’m sure it really does add to the load these long ones. That way we would had set moves. Oh well glad we still are able to come and talk in here.

Nice view bob Glad when its time you don’t have to far to move to.

Not to much happening around here will talk to you all later

Jack,

Very true.

RT

I have previously suggested a new “pot” each month.

Morning all. Lotsa snow on the ground this AM. The plow just zoomed by depositing more to move at the end of the driveway - have to go to the neighbors first - this is real heart-attack snow. V. heavy. Greg, don’t get discouraged, those web-recruiting filters sure are frustrating - suggest trying something like LinkedIn. I like the idea of a new monthly pot - so we don’t need a blow-torch to clean the crud off the bottom of the pot.

I discovered Google Earth last night - it was fun zooming down into Kalmbach World Headquarters…

Morning all. Warm and sunny. Doug M, the plow is going to go in my backyard too. OH, different plow [bottomplow behind tractor]. [;)] Love it when those Yanks get SNOW. [:-^] Off to MIL’s this PM to bar-be-que chickens for her family Easter gathering [we now have it on Sat instead of Easter]. Later

I love it, Chief! I live vicariously through your postings and others below the snow-line. It’ll happen here soon I hope. MMMM, bar-b-que. That sounds like a good breakfast too.

Mornin’ boys. Partly sunny & 39 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Back is all stiff from spreading red cedar mulch all day yesterday…still need more. Tried to work it out by walking down to the corner store for milk. Will be busy today getting fifedom ready for family dinner and egg hunt tomorrow. Gonna have to do a 10-second-tidey on the layout tonight.

cnw1995 - I use Google earth for researching rail-lines and line side industries.

Chief - …it ain’t the years;it’s the mileage…
