Turned on your link- you might want to fix your subject title. It’s IC&E. Sounds like the derailment site is in the same vicinity as the bridge collapse a few months back. Poor IC&E, they just can’t win…
EDIT: Yahoo IC&E list has posts concerning derailment, along with this link, which has alittle more info-
According to the website story this happened near Guttenberg; in my native northeast Iowa, not terribly far from my hometown of Edgewood. Unfortunate to say the least. Hopefully this is something they can get repaired soon enough. In a back-handed way, I’m kind of glad this didn’t happen when we (the CPRS) we’re running a lot of detour trains between La Crescent and Pingree Grove. That would have REALLY screwed things up.
Unfortunately, yes- besides, my evening has already been booked by my wife. Moreover, I’ve been through that area before, and I’m pretty sure there’s no way to get a good view of the accident site except by boat on the river. Keep watching the IC&E Yahoo list, though- the principal member reporting on the accident there has sometimes followed up with pictures.
Me thinks you’re right. I know U.S. 52 parallels the mainline for a little bit on the south side of town but the highway eventually climbs out of the Mississippi River valley while the mainline stays near the River. The only other thing I can think of is at Millville where there’s a road that takes you down to the old Turkey River station/siding (used to be a branch line from there going toward Garber and Elkport and then up to Wadena) but it sounds like this happened between Guttenberg and Turkey River so you’d likely be S.O.L. any way you approached it.
