A Blast From My Past - Santa Fe

Thought I’d share some photos from the past, will post them here.

Pictured below is one of Santa Fe’s hottest trains (991/199? - UPS) eastbound out of Abo Canyon at Schole, NM 02-23-1986. Gosh, has it been almost twenty years!

Jim - Lawton, NV

ATSF No 5679, an EMD SD45-2, leads this intermodal eastbound near Kayser, NM - 02-23-1986.

Nice photos Jim,
I guess the Eastbound would be the 991. Nowdays that would be the Z-9NBYWSP.

Got a chance to ride a portion of the former 199 a little while back. What a run - everybody got out of our way.

Stack,

Hey thanks, I couldn’t remember which was the eastbound number. Yep, on that day it was just like that, everything got out of its way.

Jim

ATSF No 5386 leads this eastbound intermodal towards Abo Canyon at Saia Crusher, NM - 02-23-1986.

…Back around 69 and 70 was working some test work at Kingman, Az. and around the surrounding area and enjoyed watching the SanteFe Action through that area…Including several passenger trains stopping at Kingman then just before Amtrak…Had those double level cars that always looked so great as it pulled in for it’s stop…Wasn’t there a fast mail train with the possible name of “Fast Mail”…and lots of priority at that time…

Hostling power from the shop at Albuquerque, NM - 02-14-1986

MC,

I was never a fan of the ATSF mostly because I never lived by their tracks I guess and the ESPEE took up most of my time. Hopefully someone will chime in with the answers to your questions.

Jim

Cajon and tehachapi lost that “feeling” that makes you alll tingly inside. Ever since BNSF and SP being eaten by the borg, it just doesnt make it fit in with the 1990’s train video music[:p]

This westbound with ATSF No 5252, an EMD SDF40-2, on the point dives into Abo Canyon at Scholles, NM - 02-23-1986

A trip to the past wouldn’t be right if it didn’t include these! Scholles, NM - 02-23-1986

Oh yea, gotta love those cowl units!

I get a smile and a 5 finger wave from the trainman on ATSF Cab No. 999469
between Scholle and Mountainair, NM - 02-23-1986.

BTW, with a good printer and photo grade paper a person should be able to get a decent 4x6 print out of these files.

Jim Lawton, NV MP 236

No UPRR bashing today? At the Cal/Ariz border on the Ariz side there is a girder bridge with a hugh Santa Fee (not BNSF) logo on it. There is also a old water tower as well. [:o)][:p]

Thanks for the first photo with the Kodachromes. BNSF should still have the rights to this scheme. Perhaps BNSF instead of SPSF ?

SPbed,

No UP bashing today…

nanaimo73,

Even as an Espee fan, I liked this paint. The silver trucks made it easy to photograph.

ATSF No 5367 and two other locomotives power this eastbound train past the station sign at Willard, NM - 02-23-1986

The caboose on extra 5367 east at Willard, NV - 02-23-1986.

I seem to recall that mail trains nos. 7 & 8 ran between Chicago and Los Angeles via La Junta, while nos. 9 & 10 ran maybe via Amarillo and up the valley through Bakersfield, Fresno, Stockton, and Richmond. In Sept. 1967 the United States Post Office Dept. performed a wholesale SLAUGHTER of the nation’s Railway Post Office operations and shortly thereafter these first class schedules came off. Post Office patrons in New Mexico and Arizona were particularly hard hit by the resulting deterioration of service.

Is the SP coming back to the best of your knowledge? You know if the ICC was nice the ATSF would have secured the SP unstead of UP. Would that have made you happier? I’m planning on traveling out your way next May when hopefully the snow in the Donner pass will be gone. Mr bro says you can get great shots of the UPRR not SPRR from Truckee lake. Is that correct? He also said that I80 has view points where you can stop to see the UPRR. Is that also true? How far further east is Lawton say from Truckee?
