A New Model Railroader Periodical

We need another magazine in my opinion!

I could go for another…

I would buy it, but I doubt that there is enough support to make it work.

I think there can get to be too many magazines. I actually don’t buy Classic Trains because it does run up (these things ain’t cheap). I did buy Trains Illustrated. Lets not forget that MR has several special issues throughout the year too.

Considering that MR has three special issues a year, no, unless it was something like Modeling Railroads in the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s.

I recently switched from Trains to Classic Trains for two reasons: 1: more of the period I model, '47-'50. and 2: less cost, so I can use the money for model RR! I would be interested in a '40’s version of the '50’s book.

no , they should just put that stuff back in Model Railroader where it belongs . not that i dislike MR , i buy it every month without even looking at what the articles are , and have done so for the last 20 years or so .

This is already done, but not by Kalmbach. Mainline Modeler for standard gauge, and Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette for narrow gauge, are two of the publications that come to mind that are aimed at such a market. There are probably others.

I agree with edkowal.

i would like to see a mag devoted to modern trains… i model railroads from the 90’s onwards and cancelled my subscription to M R due to too much " old stuff " give me a mag with sd 70’s …90’s etc …thanks peter

I think MR already is covering most of that and doing it very well. Cox 47

The last thing needed is to dilute the content of MR! There is little enough hard modeling info in its pages now. To start dividing the same authors between two separate publications would result in two inferior magazines, not better ones. My vote is, “Not worth it at any price!”

Add my vote to edkowal and joseph2. I don’t get the NG Gazette but I’ve subscribed to Mainline Modeler from issue 1. Their construction and prototype data cover the area suggested by the poll originater. CNJ831 puts it well. Most MR readers don’t need or want this level of data and pulling what there is from MR weakens it and duplicating MM’s content is superfluous.

No, thank you. Another mag is not needed, IMHO.

Add my vote to Edkowal, Joseph2 and Jimrice. By the way there is Fine Scale Railroader, published quarterly by Westlake Publishing Company:

Admittedly, there is a a lot of large scale content, but it does include On3, On30, etc. I have no financial interest in this magazine.

Even though I might find such a magazine interesting, in my opinion, it’s unlikely.

The first thing such a magazine would probably do is siphon off the already dwindling MR readership. Next, who is going to write the articles and staff it? Could it sustain both a large enough advertising base and enough readers to make it financially viable?

Unfortunately, I doubt it.

If you splinter the market enough, you will kill the print run volume discounts and simply turn everything into struggling niche publications … and that’s not a wise way to go. If there really is a demand for this kind of magazine, then somebody would probably have already done it.

If you ask me, the direction things ought to go is online multi-media. Now that’s the wave of the future …

Take the articles of MR from first issue thru 1980, scan them into adobe PDF format, construct an index by topic, author, etc. and include a fuzzy search for keywords, provide a “first fifty word preview” for free function, then wrap it all up with a download for $2 per article, discount if you download more than five at a time, website tied to the Kalmbach home page. Then I would cancel my subscription to the current edition of MR and then pick and choose articles “devoted to fine model building, fine models and maybe advanced layout construction” (not sure what "advanced layout construction means, though).

I’m not crazy about another magazine…

Kalmbach publishes a lot of special issues for Model Railroader, and although not bi-monthly or quarterly, they satisfy my needs. So, the less magazines I spend money on, the more I can spend on actual models and such.

But, that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t buy it if I caught my interest.[;)]
