A Tichy crane

I´ll start to make an HO Tichy crane kit: any recommendation/comments?. Thanks

Take your time and read the instructions, over and over.

You learn more from the 4th time reading them than the first. It’s a beautiful kit and if you test fit stuff before you glue, it will help you considerably. Some of the instructions don’t make too much sense until you try it differently and find out that they were right and you were wrong.

You’re gonna have a blast with it. I did.

Doc,

Are you referring to the Tichy “Jib” crane? If so, yes, take your time. The trickiest part will be feeding the chain through the hoist and around the hub.

Tom

Thanks all you. The model is the old “120 Ton Steam Wrecking Crane, Kit #4010”. (A friend of mine cancelled the making in the middle of the way…)

I assembled one of these cranes when they were first offered by Gould. I can recall their instructions where it said something like “if a part doesn’t fit, you must have used the wrong part”. Their parts did fit together so good there wasn’t any need to adjust holes, file pins, etc. I don’t know if the Tichy versions have such a high level of quality control. I have two of them still in boxes, so I’ll probably find out some day.

Note they also offer a tender for this crane and it too is a nice model. It comes with chains, spreader bars and other accessories to make it more interesting.

Bob (are you who writes for Model Railroader?), that is the kit I have, made by The Gould Company, purchased at Walthers 15 years ago…Yes, the instruction exactly says: “If you think that a part does not fit, STOP - you have made a mistake…” Congratularions for your memory. doc. Buenos Aires

It’s been a while, but yes I’ve had material in Model Railroader, many other mags too. Over 800 of my photos published so far!

are there new and older kits and if so what are some of the things that are changed???

Ken

Does anyone make a model of a crane that fits between this model and the Athearn 200 ton model? It would nice to see something like a 150-160 ton model.

I think I need help with paint

did the MOW gray have the tiger stripes???

Ken

Ken - it appears that the kit was originally made by a company called Gould - who I’d not come across until I got this kit - I don’t know how long ago. The Tichy Trains version looks as if its a pretty straight re-run as the instructions in the box still even refer to Gould. I got mine a couple of weeks ago from Micro Mark along with the boom car - they are doing what I thought was a good offer - $34 on the pair.

The castings look very nice indeed, very clean and crisp with virtually no flash or visble mould joint lines. I think this will be a winter project as it will involve quite a bit of trial and error - I really don’t rate the instruction sheet! I hope it might make more sense once I make a start.

In terms of paint I think it depends on which railroad you model on how you paint it, and how late in its life as to whether it has tiger stripes or not. For example from the couple of photos I have of MEC wreck cranes they were painted all black with white lettering - then at some stage they got yellow jibs. As far as I can work out the steam wreck cranes like this one never got tiger stripes.

thanks James

I receved two kits from ebay for the same price shipping included

looks like a great kit

I have seen some painted awsom

dont know where to start

A beautiful kit to build and very well-made parts. It’s also a good candidate for a bit of kitbashing or modification. I added some sliding “sheet metal” doors to mine, and closed in the operators area a bit, as my railroad is set in the southwestern Ontario snow belt.

My “boom idler” is built from a lowered Athearn 40’ flatcar. I added a scratchbuilt wood deck, plus some tool boxes and the equipment shed.

Wayne

Nice work, Wayne. You have the colour down to within 0.01. [:D]

just started to paint mine

wow…

this is one of the best kits I ever made

made mine black
