Adirondack Scenic RailRoad

Love the RR - planning on building three of the Thendara stations - two to go on my RR (a “family” look), and the third to give to ADK. Wish I lived a little closer (or had more time) so I could volunteer there.

Really great to see things are better on the road, and super to see the F units being kept alive, especially the FL9’s.

It is always nice to hear of or see a “scenic” railroad doing well. I wish more were available so the younger generation could experience a little of what it once was like to ride a real passenger train.

At the risk of raining on the parade, and knowing several of the individuals involved over the years…

The Adirondack continues to just hang on financially. It’s continued existence is largely a factor of the largess of New York State. In the event that support were lessened or removed…well lets just say that the problems the Western Maryland Scenic is facing are a walk in the park…

And budgets ARE TIGHT in NY just now…

Glad to see that the old adorondack division is being revived again. Hope to get up that way soon ilynobs@cox.net

I agree with Jim - it helps keep the memories alive. Important to keep examples of old diesels as well as steam…that Alco RS3 is a classic! Quite striking! (Even though I’m not a great fan of NYC livery)

In the Autumn, 1962, I had a friend named Walter Peters who worked for the New York Central. He called me at my Cambridge, MAQ, office to tell me there would be a special train, a railfan special, from Utica to Tupper Lake that weekend and that it might be the very last time to ride that trackage. It was an all-day trip, with box lunches available, using NYC E-units (E-7’s and/or E-8’s) and regular but rather scruffy lighweight coaches, mostly smooth sides (two-tone grey), not Budds. The foliage was spectacular. Average speed seemed about 20mph. I probably used the New England States (coach) to and from Boston.
