ALCO

Im just wondering how many people would be willing and have the know-how to help restore an ALCO HH1000 to operating condition. If I find some people there may be an oppourtunity to restore one! Currently is is undergoing physical restoration. (cleaning off loco, repairing cab, etc.) It needs someone who knows how to internally make an ALCO run.

Good luck!

Is this the one owned by Relco ? I remember it being used a year or two ago.

No, its a former Oliver Mining HH1000 owned by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.

Can anyone tell me the name of the man who is supposedly a god of ALCO’s and has the awesome ALCO/MILW site?

Didn’t you guys also get the SOO line Rs-1 that came through my shop in Fond du lac a few years ago? Why not start with that one? BTW alot af the engine parts for the alco’s are currently available from National, new ring sets from Kaydon mfg at really good prices. Main and rod bearings bearings still available. You need to get a pocket guide to RR officials, that will hook you up with some vendors if you havn’t already. Let us know how the restoration progresses, we expect bi weekly reports! Let us know what happens when you fill it with water and bar it over ASAP.

The RS-1 you are talking about is not ours. The DSSA owns it and since they have no plans to run it on our railroad, we will not be restoring it, although it did get some new rollerbearing trucks.
SDR_North, the ALCO in question has much more historical significance than any other old ALCO switcher. It was used by USS Steel for many years and was built in 1940.
It ran about 2 years ago and I think all that is wrong is a cracked cylander head, although e have not fully looked at the engine. This week we are cleaning out the cab and scraping off the peeling paint.
This is the ALCO:

And this is the locomotive you were talking about Randy:

Yep, thats it . The roller bearing trucks are courtesy of the ex WC / SOO GP-30s. You need to change that head !
