I presume that this new station is for Metrolink, and not Amtrak?
Don’t take this personally, but the sooner your title no longer applies, the better! Thinking about St. Louis, new commuter routes, South Shore in Michigan City, etc., etc.
EL - nice picture. The overhead walkway reminds me of the one built at Utica (NY) Union Station (a much older station, but recently nicely spruced up). Interestingly, I think some of the tunnels are still in place there, but they’re no longer even being considered for use.
I like the overhead walkway, too, Larry. It reminds me of Fullerton (not far from Buena Park–spent a nice couple of hours there this past spring), which was an older station but recently had the overhead walkway added, complete with elevators for those who need them. I can think of a lot of stations in my neck of the woods that would benefit from such walkways (except for a problem when access to the center track is required).
Amtrak is simply a tenant at Utica Union Station - the county owns, and has several offices in, the station. There is also a restaurant, bus station (Greyhound), news stand and barber shop. The Adirondack Scenic also runs out of the station (using the overhead).
I’d bet a dollar Amtrak is looking into whether a stop there on the San Diegan is viable.
Nice to see a new station so close to where I used to live nearly, but growing up there gives one a different perspective, we use to call the place Buena *art.
While the new station seems nice for the Metrolink passengers and is nice and clean and such, I prefer a more “classic” design (could be read as “old fashioned” if you prefer). An example would be this one at Naperville, IL
I couldn’t agree with EolaFan more, but so many of the train stations here in the LA area have been torn down and I would rather have these modern “faux” depots than the bus shelter you can end up with.
I like that Naperville depot. Will have to get there one day.
The San Diegans are now called Pacific Surfliners and some go from San Diego to Santa Barbara. And the Amtrak stop at Fullerton is only one stop (about 4 miles) to the east. And the Buena Park platform is only 600 feet long, which is, I think, too short for Amtrak. I don’t think we’ll see many Amtrak stops there.
I have used the BP station to go to LA a few times. Some comments on the bridge: The sidewalls are some kind of glass. I want to see what the temperature on the bridge gets to on a hot summer day. And I wonder what the local graffitti artists will think of this new canvas. Note that the Fullerton walkway sidewalls are of heavy duty chain link.
Another bit of info: the builders had major problems getting the elevators working. One rumor had it that the cars, as delivered, didn’t fit the elevator shaft. On my last trip there was still a problem with the elevator on the south side of the tracks and a team of contractors were looking at it. I will be using the station again this Thursday, so we’ll see.
Also the BP parking lot was just short of being completely full the last time I was there on a weekday at 8 AM. I can always find a parking space in Fullerton. Then again, two bus lines stop right at the BP station, one of which runs “only” 3/4 of a mile from my house.
