Anyone know the history behind this GP9?

Hey All!

So @Bigguy511 recently told me about a Bay Colony Ex. Detroit, Toledo, and Shoreline GP9 that sits abandoned, and I might purchase it, but I’m curious to know what the locomotive has been through before I begin the restoration process and put it back in its Original factory paint scheme

Formerly numbered BCLR #1750, Ex. BCLR GP7 #1501, Indiana Midland #50, GTW (#6050), Detroit Toledo & Shore Line #50. GTW assigned No. though it was never actually renumbered. Rblt BCLR at E. Wareham 3/96 with engine from CCR GP9 #1925. Renumbered #1750 and classed GP9R. Redesignated GP8, named “Gordon H. Fay.”

|Serial Number:|17843|Order No:|6491|
|Frame Number:|6491-1|Built:|2/1953|
|Notes:|ex-DTS 50, ex-BCLR 1750. Sold to MC|

I was not aware of this locomotive even being up for sale, not that I keep tabs on such things.

Mass Coastal purchased the Bay Colony in recent history, and moved the two other ex-BCLR Geeps onto the cape. 1701 was kept on the Millis line, which is isolated from the rest of the BCLR system. I believe the hassle of getting it over to the rest of the system is part of why Mass Coastal hasn’t done so yet.

I think the last time it saw action was a few years ago, no idea what sort of condition it’s in. Clearly Mass Coastal aren’t in any sort of hurry to do anything with it, if they do have any plans for it.

Its windows are boarded up and has been sitting there since 2023 and the lights on both ends of the unit are blown out and I belive the original 567 Prime mover is dead since vandals did manage to steal a few Cylinders from what I’m reading and it is up for sale but there isn’t an asking price…

It’s Detroit and Toledo Shore Line.

How the heck do you just casually steal a few cylinders out of a prime mover?

Not sure I’m very inclined to believe that, though I am willing to believe it’s been vandalized since it is just left to sit outside.

What are your sources for this information?

I’m pretty sure they were cut out like how Metrolink cut a single cylinder out of their former F59PHs

Some other details, As I visited the unit recently:

There is a hole in the Fuel tank; Needs replacing

Battery box has been rummaged for wiring

Prime mover doors barred shut

Weld line on high hood, likely from reclassification.

MU cables missing.

Thanks for the info @Bigguy511

Is there a way i can obtain it and have it transported to EMD for restoration? If its too costly ill do it myself

can you verify if the prime mover has actually had cylinders pulled by vandals?

Yeah I can look again and see if any images were posted, there was just an anonymous article about stolen cylinders from the exact unit

@El_Fixes_Things, The article was taken down so i presume it was fake but when i get a close up ill check the Prime mover for sure to see if any Cylinders were indeed stolen, I know a 8-Cylinder 710ECO repower should do the trick for the unit making it a GP22ECO

I’m not sure… The tracks do connect to CSX but the last time they were used likely was when the engine was put there. It’s in Medfield, MA, and connects to CSX in Framingham. The unit’s going to need heavy preparations to move, if it can be. The lines overgrown, and the unit’s on blocks of wood. I can’t take pictures or really visit the engine, but i’ll give your Q’s the A’s I have.

Whats up with the head lights and ditch lights they look like they were bashed

He probably means ‘power assemblies’. The 567/645/710 has unit cylinders above the deck of the block, held down by ‘crab studs’, to make it easier to swap individual cylinders when they need servicing. While it would be unwieldy to pull a power assembly with the hood still on, there’s certainly aftermarket demand for some of the components.

That is true Woke, Its hard to get them out with the hood still in place

Ditchights are gone, sadly, however, the headlights behind some tape basically.

Cheap Repairs :+1:

Love it

I’m probably going to order LED lamps and ditch lights now…

Give me a bit I’ll be back

Yeah, Looks like you’ll basically need a few power assemblies, a battery, and some headlights, Heck, some other parts could be inside the cab

These should do!

Now I shall wait to confirm the Geep is coming here to get prepped!

That’s just lighting, the rest I need to confirm in person…
